DEAD! Fusion/Taurus/Fiesta/Focus Dropped!

Ford has made it official by announcing it will discontinue the Fusion, Fiesta, and Taurus and will drop the Focus line to just the Focus Active next year. The transition will be complete by 2020, officially killing off the sedan. Mustang will remain. Ford intends to become a 90% SUV/Truck company.

Building a winning portfolio and focusing on products and markets where Ford can win. For example, by 2020, almost
90 percent of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, utilities and commercial vehicles. Given declining consumer demand and product profitability, the company will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America. Over the next few years, the Ford car portfolio in North America will transition to two vehicles – the best-selling Mustang and the all-new Focus Active crossover coming out next year. The company is also exploring new “white space” vehicle silhouettes that combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility.
Aaaaand I told you so....been waiting for this moment for a few years now but even I didn't think it would happen so abruptly.

If I were Ford, I would definitely kill the Focus name on the Focus Active and make it a distinctly new crossover brand.

Looks like Ford is going to have to shut a plant or two.

So that means the MKZ is gone too I suppose....what about Continental???

No sedans....seems like a bad move. Keep at least the Fusion IMO.

Re: Fusion/Fiesta/Taurus Officially Cancelled

We've heard the MKZ was being discontinued for a year or two now, but assumed that meant it was getting a new name. Lincoln will probably exit the sedan business as well, the rumor that Continental is being dropped is probably accurate at this point but I don't think it's as imminent. I would like to see the Continental name appear on something however.

We have other crossover vehicles arriving from Ford which...as they suggested...will bridge the gaps.

Ford - if you are reading this, at least bring the Focus Active as a sedan, hatch AND wagon!

Think smaller Regal Sportback or Mercedes-Benz' or Lada's high rise sedans.

I think this opens up the capacity to have the Focus be its own line, able to fill multiple niches easily. However, if Ford tries to get by with a single Focus model in the USA, they're officially too stupid to run a Circle K, much less an international car company.

This also, IMHO, means that the next versions of the CUVs had better be amazing, and all over the price points.

If GM can justify Buick, and if Honda can justify Acura, we can damned well have Mercury back.

Ford, I didn't think you were this much of a child. You're like a 5 year old.

If something doesn't work, you give up and cry...

Wow.

Re: Fusion/Fiesta/Taurus Officially Cancelled

I think Ford is doing exactly what it should be doing, it all makes perfect sense. The Focus Active is all they need and it helps them to fill in some of those utility gaps, the rest of the Focus range would not sell well at all here. I'm a little dubious about the loss of Fusion right now, I just hope the new Escape is a much better vehicle than it is right now since it can't match the Fusion for refinement and comfort at the same price.

With the downsizing of their Focus plans, I wonder if that means the Focus Active will still be coming from China.

I think it's a mistake to drop Fusion. Fiesta and Taurus, ok, but Fusion, no.

I think ultimately one of the "white space" vehicles they're talking about will essentially be a next-gen Fusion on stilts.

Current Vehicles:
2009 Ford Flex Limited w/ AWD
Light Ice Blue/White Suede Roof | Med. Lt. Stone Interior | Vista Roof
2018 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
Lightning Blue | Black Top | Black Interior

Presumably it won't be a 3-box sedan design however.
