One of the biggest changes coming to the 2015 Ford Mustang is the addition of independent rear-suspension, though it looks like those who pine for the classic solid-rear axle setup will still have an option.
A report from Gas2.org claims that a new body-in white program will be introduced for the Mustang, outfitting the car with a 9″ solid rear axle. A body-in-white car is essentially the shell of a vehicle, which can be purchased and then finished in any way the owner sees fit. The program’s main purpose will be to attract race teams to the car, as a live-rear axle setup is still desirable to many, especially drag racers.
This program will definitely be a welcome addition to the Cobra Jet program, and is absolutely necessary if Ford plans to continue its drag race programs.
This is absolutely the way to go, IRS for the standard road going vehicles with an option for track only solid axle. It would have been the preferable direction for the current car too IMO, not that sales have been overly affected. I believe the value to Ford of having the Mustang seen as on the same playing field as some much pricier competition is worth the added expense. And that of course ignores the inevitable Lincoln variant that would not exists on a solid axle platform.
What a cool idea! It's great when automakers go out of their way to provide fans with what they want.
That said, I think that making IRS standard for regular buyers was the right way to go, and leaving the solid axle for the hardcore guys and gals who want to build their own sports car.
Personally I would prefer the IRS even in a drag car especially if you consider that the IRS drag records are in the 7 second elapsed time range. It awaits to be seen how the 2015 S550 platform IRS will respond to modifications that optimize its launch performance.
cool idea and a smart move given how the solid axle is proven tech in drag racing wheras IRS is more suited for road and handling courses
