The current one finally lost it. However, the increase in storage space by moving the spare outside are (usually) considerable
True, the EcoSport really needs the extra cargo space since it has a short Fiesta-hatchback like rear overhang.
The EcoSport was developed as a FWD and 4WD crossover, though currently only Ford in Brazil builds the 4WD model.
If they were going to put the spare on the cargo floor (in a spare wheel well) like on the Fiesta, it would eat up the space for the rear differential and IRS of the 4WD model.
Of course Ford could have given the 4WD and FWD different trunk floor stampings, but they didn't, probably for costs reasons.
I'm just not sure if there is enough clearance under the floor to hang a full-size spare under the floor.
You can see how the FWD model shares the same fuel tank (shaped to give room for the propeller shaft) as the 4WD model.
I don't mind the rear door mounted spare on the EcoSport.
I've driven the EcoSport and wouldn't mind having one.
PS: The 4WD EcoSport only comes with one engine in Brazil, a flex-fuel version of the old 2.0 Duratec engine.
