I think my Dad is going to be buying a GM truck for the first time, ha. The new GM trucks are right up his alley; cheap, attractive, and fuel efficient (presumably).

Has anyone seen what a stripped down $21K 4 cyl Canyon looks like (Chevy version is not attractive)? I keep seeing pics of the loaded up models costing $35K, which are not bad.

Well, maybe GM will finally start selling a few trucks this fall. Ha!

I suspect that those cheaper version will have a black unpainted front and rear bumpers, 2 doors and no chrome at all. GM has not yet show pictures of the complete line of this new truck.

Actually, the Canyon we see in pics is priced closer to $40k

to get a V6 model with very modest trim level you are at high $20's

Since when did a difference of 21.2 inches in length and 6.4 inches of width become too small of a Difference? If this was their reasoning for cars, they'd only have one sedan in the North American lineup, the Fusion.

T6 Ranger 4-door crewcab
Length: 210.7 in
Width: 72.8 in
Height: 71.5 in (72.8 in with roofrails)
Wheelbase: 126.8 in

2014 F-150 4-door crewcab (Super Crew) with the shortest 5.5ft bed
Length: 231.9 in
Width: 79.2 in
Height: 75 in
Wheelbase: 144.5 in

For reference:
2010 Explorer Sport Trac
Length: 210.2 in
Width: 73.7 in
Height: 71.6 in
Wheelbase: 130.5 in

The current global T6 Ranger is close to the size of an Explorer Sport Trac

Sounded more like excuses why they don't need the Ranger in the US.
1. They F150 is lighter and has a 2.7 EcoBoost with auto stop/start
2. The mid-size pickup market is small and Matt O'Leary thinks it's not going to grow.

Why do they always avoid the fact that the F-150 has gotten too big for some people.

Based on Ford's logic, if they make the next Ford Fusion 300 pounds lighter, they'd drop the Focus.

The F-150 is now lighter, but i'm sure it isn't as easy to park as the shorter and narrower Ford Ranger.
If you want an F150 that's nearly as long as the Ranger crew cab (double cab), you'd have to get a single/regular cab F-150 with the shortest bed... and it will still be over half a foot wider.

Re: New Ford Ranger Spotted In The US, Looks A Lot Bigger Than We Remember

You can't compare trucks sizes to sedan sizes and expect customers react the same in the truck segment. Truck customers have different needs and expectations, and the market shrinks further when you consider most of small-truck customers are now served by Crossovers and SUVs...which is why GM is targeting those customers with the small truck. Either way, this customer is not significant enough to warrant investment from Ford, especially with a new more FE F-150 on the way and a Ford dealership packed with Crossover options which GM does not have.

But hey, we're about to find out how successful GM is with their trucks and Ford can follow with a next-gen Ranger in the future if it becomes warranted. Remember GM didn't just take its World truck and ship it here, they completely re-engineered and restyled it...a non-trivial expense which the Ranger would also need due to significant regional differences. Now GM can do that when they basically phone in their new full-size trucks like they did, ha.

Heck, the sport trac looks better in my mind. I wonder how the GMC 7/8 truck will do. If all they get are people who would have bought a Silverado, then that isn't so good. Maybe Ram will overtake GM in half tons with the new Canyon/Colorada release.

I could see a small truck working well in the market, but it needs to be small and super fuel efficient.
