New Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST Development

New Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST Development Under Way
Autocar

Ford Performance is starting work on the next-generation Fiesta and Focus ST now that the Focus RS is in production, but a hot version of the current Mondeo looks increasingly unlikely.

Focus RS chief engineer Tyrone Johnson told Autocar his next job was to start work on the replacements for the Fiesta and Focus STs.

Although Johnson wouldn’t discuss production dates, the new Focus and Fiesta are due in 2018-2019, suggesting launch dates for the ST versions of 2019-2020.

Johnson says both cars will have to retain their blend of accessible performance and everyday usability but will also have to evolve to deal with competition from new rivals.

Johnson was less encouraging about a Mondeo ST being engineered to rival the Audi S4/S6 and BMW M3/M5.

“It’s a pretty big car and the rivals are now offering around 500bhp. I think that’s a big ask for the Mondeo,” he said.

At around 1800kg and nearly 4.9 metres long, the Mondeo is closer in size to the BMW 5 Series than the 3 Series.

“Making a fast Mondeo fit our HP2 category would be very difficult,” said Johnson.

Any Ford Performance model has to fit into one of three categories — HP1, HP2 and Elite — which Ford defines by strict performance and handling criteria.

The new GT is an Elite model, while the Focus RS and HP2 and the Fiesta/Focus ST are HP1s.

Both GT350 models would probably be considered HP2.

Re: New Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST Development

First time I've heard of the HP1, HP2, and Elite categories. Love it! Awesome way for Ford Performance to maintain the right standards and focus.

Come on Ford, toss us a Fusion ST bone! You've got the Sport as a great starting point... find a way to drop some weight, slam it a bit, bump the power up a notch, and you're off to the races!

Re: New Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST Development

Hmm, suppliers over here are gearing up for new Fiesta Job1 beginning January 2017, and new Focus end of August 2017.
FoE generally reveals new models 6 months prior to production dates, so the new Fiesta reveal could be any day now, and the Focus March 2017.

Re Focus ST reveal time line for the MK3 (Paris Sept.2010) was 9 months after the Focus MK3 reveal at the 2010 NAIAS (Jan.2010).
Sorry too lazy to bust my memory banks on the Fiesta time lines :-)

Re: New Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST Development

I would expect at a minimum for the Focus ST to have the performance version of the 2.0 EB (270 HP). It was silly to have to go with cash in hand to a Ford dealer to get that little bump up. And touque vectoring, please, to better handle the power, as I also expect the AWD to be an RS exclusive.

Fiesta will be in Frankfurt and LA. Focus in Detroit and Geneva (such is my guess)

ST revealed a year later in probably Geneva and LA

don't All Fwd's transfer power Left/Right?
what more would a 2-wheels-only torque-vectoring accomplish?
