Ford is expanding its global battery research and development footprint for electrified vehicles this year, adding research and engineering capabilities in Europe and Asia to take advantage of new market opportunities

The company has invested in a world-class battery research and development facility at the University of Michigan to accelerate advanced battery research and development

Ford is the top seller of plug-in hybrid vehicles and second in total sales of electrified vehicles in America and has recently expanded its offerings in growing markets, including China, Taiwan and Korea

This year, for instance, Ford expanded its Electrified Powertrain Engineering (EPE) program in Dearborn to focus on developing new and innovative technologies for electrified vehicles by hiring more than 120 additional electrified vehicle engineers and moving the EPE team into its own dedicated facility, Ford Engineering Laboratory.

Ford also is expanding in China and Europe to accelerate battery technology research and development for new markets. By using an innovative hardware and software system called HIL, or Hardware-in-the-Loop, the global team can test battery technology and control system hardware in a virtual environment to simulate how batteries and control modules would behave in different – often punishing – environments in any part of the world.

University of Michigan Battery Lab
In October, Ford, the University of Michigan and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced a new $9 million battery lab at the University of Michigan that is helping the company develop batteries that are smaller, lighter and less expensive to produce.

The state-of-the-art, small-scale manufacturing facility uses the latest battery development and research technologies to replicate the performance of full-scale production batteries, allowing for faster implementation in future production vehicles.

“The Battery Lab gives us an opportunity to test hundreds of chemistries and cell designs that can then be translated into the production line,” said Ted Miller, senior manager of energy storage strategy and Research. “This is truly a world-class environment for Ford to develop and test industry-leading battery technology.”

^...this reminds me of the more recent Fiesta eWheelDrive prototype Ford and Schaeffler developed, with putting the motors in the wheels to save space for passengers/cargo.

hummmm.....two Ford vehicles, similar in-wheel EV technology. Just thinking. This could be a way that Ford can get around completely new EV ONLY platforms, by moving the motors to the wheels, and freeing up that space for batteries, allowing the platform to also be used for an EV, hybrid or ICE vehicle.

Tesla on the other hand has no need for a 'convertible' EV platform, since all they offer is EV. But Ford has to meet consumer demands for all 3 types of drivetrains.

Researching for conversion of my 1994 GMC SLE Suburban to electric made me think about 4WD as it is currently just a 2WD rig. As I started to search I found many options for taking certain electric motors and connecting them to the transmission and using what is there already on AWD/4WD auto's for moving the vehicle. I got to thinking much like Tesla, what about an Axle Electric motor solution and started to search to see what was out there and was very surprised to find many interesting home grown and some commercial options...

...This design allowed them to take a 2009 Ford F150 Pickup and dump the existing powertrain, including driveline, heavy axle and create an 4WD Pickup without having to touch the existing handling characteristics by putting the battery pack in the exact center of the auto to keep the truck hauling and handling just like Ford Engineered it to be...

...So what about Horsepower and Torque? This is where is gets really exciting as this Ford F150 with the 4WD in Wheel motors produces the following:

2,300 lbs feet of combined torque from a dead stop
448 HP from the combined 4 motors...

much much MORE...

I rather expect that of A.M.P but not cD6 which will be the basis of the Aviator/ngContinental

that's part of why I'm thinking A.M.P & cD6 will overlap as far as wlb/ovl/interior room...at the Fusion-Edge/Z-X level...with the Ford's on A.M.P while the Lincolns use cD6...possibly

just hope FoMoCo can have them built on the same assemblyline, if needed

I really hope Ford's miracle CD6 also includes dual engine accommodation. I would love for it to also be I3-I4 ONLY, but Ford still has some legacy in V6 engines, so that won't happen this generation.
