The EPA methods are changing to more closely predict RealWorld MPG. Here's the comparison of how both the new 3.5v6 powered Taurus and previous 3.0v6 equiped 500 are rated.

new method _ old method __ model_____ ( hint: compare vertically )

18 / 28 (22) - 20 / 31 (24) -- 2008 Taurus 3.5 V-6 FWD
19 / 26 (21) - 21 / 29 (24) -- 2007 Five Hundred 3.0 V-6 FWD

17 / 24 (19) - 19 / 26 (21) -- 2008 Taurus 3.5 V-6 AWD
17 / 23 (19) - 19 / 25 (21) -- 2007 Five Hundred 3.0 V-6 AWD
[ city / hwy (combined) ]

summary:
All highway MPG's improve! with the extra 60HP of the new 3.5v6 powered models
City mileage unchanged in AWD versions.
Just 1 less City MPG in FWD versions.

analysis/editorial comment:
!!! it's like getting a pay-raise AND having your taxes go down !!!

Unless Toyota does something drastic, the Avalon seems to not have a huge advantage anymore. I think (not sure) that the Taurus is a bigger all round vehicle, and given its got a higher safety rating, and a lower MSRP, accross the board, Ford can hope for conquest sales
