I don't know if the rest of you guys noticed this looking at the different model configurations for the Focus, but it appears you CANNOT get both a manual transmission and rear disc brakes, at least in the "standard" (non-ST) models. This makes it appear as if Ford is positioning the manual transmission models as the entry-level strippo models, and encouraging people to step up to the higher trim levels with the PowerShift. The fact that the manual is a 5-speed, while a lot of other mfrs. are going to six-speeds, even in their entry-level models, is also a bit puzzling.

While this will probably be a non-issue for most mainstream consumers, there will be a small percentage of customers that were hoping they could get the manual trans/rear disc combination that will be disappointed. Your thoughts?

This along with the fact that the manual isn't available with upper trim levels has eliminated the Focus from my shopping list. I'm due to get a new daily driver when the weather breaks, and although I usually only get coupes, I was willing to try and concede in the case of the Focus and cope with a sedan. But after I saw the order guide and realized what I just mentioned, game over.

I'm due to get a new daily driver when the weather breaks, and although I usually only get coupes, I was willing to try and concede in the case of the Focus and cope with a sedan. I'm sure you're not the only one that feels this way. I think this is a major strategic mis-step by Ford, especially if it hopes to make significant inroads into the sport compact enthusiast market. Just out of curiosity, would you be willing to pay a little extra to get a 6-speed manual on one of the upper trim levels, or have it be a no-cost option relative to PowerShift?

The manual trans cars drag down the CAFE average. As cars like the Focus help the company immensely, with CAFE requirements, they will do what they can to eek out any minute gain.

I don't understand peoples aversion to a manual without a clutch (PowerShift). It has self shifting capability, so who cares if you are not allowed the privledge of a tired left leg??

so even tho ^this^ doesn't change the initial assortment (a number of posters say they expect a 6speed manual within a year or so)

there will be a lot of variants worldwide, from which Ford-NA can choose, provided they can make a business case for it

but
afaik the days of stripper performance cars are over...
...even before the gov'mint outlaws petrol-HP directly

I'm sure a lot more is coming in terms of the Focus story. If the 1.6 EB is coming to the U.S. in an intermediate model, or as an option on the higher trim levels, I think it would be in Ford's interest to offer a three-pedal manual option to appease the enthusiasts that don't want to go all-the-way to the ST. Just my $0.02.

Actually, with the SE Sport package, the Focus does in fact come with rear disc brakes and a manual (or automatic) tranny. :)

SE Sport Package

16" alloy wheels

- Sport cloth seats

- Rear disc brakes

- SelectShift™ (if equipped with automatic transmission)

- Piano black grille

- Rear spoiler

- Metallic interior trim finish

- Leather-wrapped steering wheel
