Ford has been quietly blurring the line between muscle car and sports car since the 2010 Mustang debuted at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. Lighter, smaller and nimbler than rivals like the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, the Mustang established itself early on as being just as happy on a road course as it was tackling the quarter mile...

...Be smart about when you pour on the power, don't overcook your line and the 2013 Mustang GT will be a willing dance partner any day of the week. There is no dramatic oversteer or clumsy understeer plowing. Just more poise than should be possible from a live-axle, well-tuned or otherwise. Those who pine for an independent rear suspension may politely shut their pie holes...

...Ford seems to realize that many buyers tire quickly of big flash and straight-line punch, and has created a range that can just as easily be compared to a genuine sports car like the $60,100 BMW M3 Coupe with its 414-horsepower 4.0-liter V8. We can hear your scoffs echoing across the great expanses of the internet already, but the truth is the 2013 Mustang needs only a slightly sharper suspension and a more well-sorted brake system to be transformed from an already impressive machine into a purebred sports car. Then again, that's what the Boss 302 is for.

The region around Portland, Oregon, offers some truly great backroads for driving enthusiasts; and while they might be perfect for testing out sports cars in the summer and fall months (the dry season), always-gray mid-March perhaps wasn’t the most appropriate place to preview the 2013 Ford Mustang.

We were also surprised when with pouring rain, and temperatures down in the 30s, Ford urged us not to keep to the Interstates and boulevards but to get out and drive a route it had planned on Coast Range roads. But we soon figured out why: Those wet, not-so-ideal conditions, with choppy backroads partially covered with debris and grit, only served to underscore just how surprisingly sophisticated the Mustang is today...

...The Mustang starts as low as $22,995 for the V-6 or $31,095 for the GT. For less than $30k for the V-6 or just over $35k for the GT, you can get a very well equipped Coupe.

Freshened look, better-detailed yet, goodness intact

So the 2013 Mustang looks fresher and better-detailed, and has a few new and noteworthy features (like user-configurable steering boost), but drives mostly the same as before—and that’s a good thing.

And the Mustang family has a bigger enthusiasts’ story yet to come later this year—when Ford introduces the new 2013 Shelby GT500, with a 650-hp (or more) V-8 and an astonishing 200-mph top speed, and costing just $54,200.

In the meantime, look for those revised 2013 Mustang V-6 and GT models to reach dealerships later this spring.

I know looks are subjective, but the wheel options on the Mustang destroy what is an otherwise beautiful machine (The shelby front really makes this car pop)...... This car needs aftermarket wheels to really set it off however because the factory choices are ass ugly! (something the average buyer won't spring for) ...... something the Camaro and Challenger do not need because they have stunning whell choices. Sounds simple and petty, but I'm convinced this is what held the Mustang back over the Camaro in sales numbers.

Thats my only 2 cents on this ..... otherwise Love the Mustang.

I actually really like gotta have it green. I think it looks great with the new tail lights.

I need a bright red convertible GT premium with a black interior and stick. I'm a traditionalist...
