Nissan Unveils Crossover EV Concept with More Torque Than GT-R

TOKYO -- Nissan's edgy new IMx crossover concept delivers a vision of the carmaker's 2020 technology game plan while ticking all the boxes for what's hot and trending.

Utility vehicle packaging with four-wheel drive? Check. Zero emissions? Check. Autonomous driving, artificial intelligence and on-the-go connectivity? Check, check and check.

And, to boot, the all-electric crossover, unveiled Wednesday at the Tokyo Motor Show, might just accelerate faster than a Nissan GT-R.

The design looks futuristic, with its chiseled face and plethora of slits. But executives say it previews a host of technologies Nissan Motor Co. aims to bring to market starting around 2020.

Nissan's IMx answers the call with crossover styling and four-wheel, all-electric drive. It also foreshadows a new dedicated EV platform Nissan wants to debut around 2020.

The architecture underpinning the IMx will support EVs across numerous segments in a layout that delivers a flat vehicle floor with ample room for battery packs, said Toshiyuki Nakajima, manager of Nissan's advanced engineering division. The EV platform will be shared with alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi Motors, he added.

"It was decided to launch a common platform for EVs," Nakajima said. "Different kinds of vehicles are going to be produced -- small-sized cars, hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and large-sized vehicles. So, this platform is going to be used for producing these models."

The IMx is envisioned with two electric motors, one powering the front wheels, the other the back. Each motor delivers 160 kilowatts of power for combined torque of a whopping 700 newton-meters (516 pounds-feet) -- more lift-off than the GT-R, Nissan's crown jewel sports car.

"Huge torque is going to be generated with quick response," Nakajima said. "It is unprecedented performance."

YAMAHA TO DEBUT CONCEPT CAR AT TOKYO MOTOR SHOW
Alex Nishimoto - WordsOctober 13, 2017
Motor Trend

Yamaha Motor Co. is bringing a concept car to the Tokyo auto show later this month. The company best known for its motorcycles and powersports vehicles revealed few details other than that it will be an “automobile design concept,” but here’s hoping for a follow-up to 2015’s Sports Ride concept.

The Sports Ride concept (pictured) was an ultralight two-seat sports car based around the iStream manufacturing process designed by Gordon Murray, the designer of the McLaren F1. That process features extensive use of carbon fiber and is said to dramatically lower the cost of vehicle production. The iStream platform consists of a lightweight, high-strength chassis that accommodates multiple body styles by bonding different composite panels to the frame.

EV platforms will change everything since there will be no need/focus on having a 'dedicated platform' for a brand, but it's more about how the suspension is tuned, battery pack capacity, along with the number of motors and relative HP/torque.

Which can explain a bit more of the cost savings for manufacturers, along with rapid design and production of new models.

That big Mazda sedan is beautiful! Sensual and atractive... elegant... a very good design. You can put an Aston Martin Lagonda badge on it and everybody believe is an Aston...
The Nissan electric CUV looks like all electric CUVs... nothing new
The Mitsu is horrible
The retro electric Honda is interesting...

That Mazda is beautiful. Not a fan of the interior since it's so minimalist but I know that's what Mazda is going for these days so it fits for them, I am just personally not a fan of that kind of stuff.

I actually like the little Honda, apart from the ugly Honda badge.

Pretty soon there won't be a hood, it'll just be grille mesh all the way up to the windshield.

I shouldn't have given them any ideas......

The Mazda Vision Coupe is extremely elegant, simple and beautiful. The design allows only the necessary elements. No hard lines, no adornments, but exudes luxury. This car deserve a luxury brand badge. Are the Lexus designers looking at this Mazda?

if it feels/looks good up-close-in-person it'lll work
AND be much More to my liking than a MercedesBordello
