MONEY CENTRAL / Associated Press: Ford to Build Subcompact Car in Brazil

Market Watch: Ford to build subcompact car for U.S. market in Brazil

The Ford from Ipanema?

Does this mean we need to re-think that Fiesta/Ka "Brazil-Only" little car we saw recently?
I wonder if theoldwizard has any relation to my spiritual mentor the great lazerwizard?

Ford once, not long ago, anounced that they would import the euro Fusion from Brazil and the union derailed the project. I hope that now that the company is in clear and present danger they will have a wiser position.

The Ford from Ipanema? I get it, but I can't believe others wouldn't. I've seen the song used in commercials recently.

As for the quality, will this be like the VW Fox of the '80s, or the Embraer regional jets Americans fly on daily?

WardsAuto.com: Brazil to Build Small Car for U.S.
By Sol Biderman

SAO PAULO – Parts manufacturers here confirm reports
Ford Motor Co. will build its new B-car here for sale in the U.S.

Production should begin in late 2009 or early 2010, sources say,
with volumes projected at 50,000-100,000 units per year.

Ford officials earlier said the car would be targeted as a ’10 model.
(...)
Paulo Cardamone, an analyst with CSM Worldwide Inc., says Brazil
beat out Mexico for the right to produce the new car, which “will be
targeted only for export.”

___________
my comments:
WHY if it's based on the Mazda2, which should be on sale in about 12 months,
are they projecting an additional 18 months or more to send us a version?
Imho,
this is one of those cases where we haven't heard the real story yet.
