After a hectic centenary year, Chevrolet is planning another busy 12 months, with five new models set to launch in 2012.

Chief among them will be a compact crossover based on an extended version of the new Aveo supermini.

According to Chevrolet insiders, the wraps will come off at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2012, and the car will take the fight to Ford’s new Fiesta SUV.

The production version will get similar styling to the GPiX concept, and although it will be front-wheel drive as standard, potent range-topping models will be offered with the option of 4WD.

The SUV will also feature Chevy’s new Ecotec turbo petrol engines, plus a 1.6-litre diesel that complies with strict new Euro VI emissions regulations.

Mark Terry, boss of Chevrolet UK, told us: “We’re looking to add a Cruze estate and Colorado pick-up to the UK range.” Also on the way are a three-door Aveo and new flagship Malibu saloon.

It would make sense to have some kind of utility vehicle to slot below the Equinox in Chevrolet's lineup, although I certainly wouldn't look to the hideous GPiX Concept for design inspiration. My preference would be an enlarged production version of the Groove Concept. It would be much more attractive and it would also give Chevrolet a sort of modern looking followup to the HHR. Besides, I thought the GPiX Concept was a preview of the equally repulsive Chevrolet Agile that was created for developing markets?

I don't know about a Cruze wagon (estate), but I still think GM was foolish not to offer the Cruze 5-door over here. I've seen quite a few 5-door versions of the new Focus running around. I think GM is losing out.

I also just realized that the report came from Auto Express, which could mean a couple of things:
1) The report is not accurate since Auto Express is not known for its accuracy concerning future products.
2) It's a UK publication, which means we might not see some of these products in the US (of course, we are getting the Malibu, though).
