Chevrolet has re-entered the low cab forward truck market.

The American automaker will offer low cab forward trucks in the U.S. starting next year, thanks to a collaboration with Japanese automaker Isuzu, which left the U.S. market in 2008. The new GM low cab forward trucks will be based on the Isuzu N-Series and six models will be offered under the Chevrolet brand: 3500, 3500HD, 4500, 4500HD, 5500 and 5500 HD.

The partnership will allow Chevrolet to return the brand to a growing segment of the commercial vehicle market while expanding choices for fleet and commercial truck customers.

The new low cab forward trucks will be available in regular- and crew-cab body styles and powerplants include GM’s 6.0-liter V8 gas engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission or Isuzu-sourced 3.0- and 5.2-liter turbo-diesel engines. Chevrolet also noted that its offerings will be the only low cab forward trucks in the North American market to offer a gas-powered powertrain.

Chassis lengths for the new trucks will range from 109 inches to 212 inches and boasts easy driver entry and exit, easy access to the engine compartment with a 45-degree tilting cab and compatibility with a variety of body types, including refrigerated box, stake/flat bed and service bodies.

“Bringing low cab forward trucks back to our portfolio strengthens Chevrolet’s commitment to providing commercial customers with more choices and provides customers with a versatile lineup of trucks, vans and crossovers,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet and Commercial Sales. “This addition helps our dealers satisfy their commercial customers’ needs all in one place.”

Interesting the very different importance GM and Ford put on their commercial vehicles. I am loving the Connect + Transit + F-Series lineup in the US, and think that a full commercial lineup is such a smart decision. I mentioned in another thread, and while it might damage the reputation it has today, I like the idea of a commercial Flex! Like the HHR, it would be a real attention-getter for small companies!

It's odd how little attention GM is paying to commercial vehicles. They have the resources to do in-house vehicles, but they're grabbing them from other places.

Exactly! Where GM is just rebadging Nissans and Isuzus Ford is making their own products with Transit Connect, Transit, soon to be all new Super Duty, and their new medium trucks which FYI unlike everybody else is used their own drivetrains. The previous version used Cummins diesel and Allison transmissions, now its the 6.7 Powerstroke and Ford transmissions.
