Chrysler Group's Dodge brand is going to get a version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta small hatchback late next year as a replacement for the Dodge Caliber.

Chrysler/Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne identified the Giulietta as the donor model in comments Thursday discussing Fiat's surprisingly robust third-quarter earnings. The Chrysler five-year product plan unveiled last Nov. 4 identifies the Caliber as dead meat after 2011, to be replaced by a Fiat-based model of similar size built by Chrysler.

It would be the first Fiat-based, Chrysler-built vehicle resulting from Chrysler's Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plan last year. To keep the Detroit car company from going out of business, Fiat was given management control of Chrysler and a 20% stake that can be increased as certain milestones are met.

On the contrary, I HOPE its a rebadge. The memories of how they ruined the great SLK turning it into the disastrous Crossfire are all to recent.
