Click here for the article from MotorTrend

A Flex with EcoBoost and better gas mileage than the D35 sounds mighty fine to me! Not to mention that a 300+ HP AWD Fusion would be the new king of the mid-size clan. I can't wait to see how this all pans out now because this is all VERY good news if it's true.

Notice that they say the '10 Fusion will ride on the Mondeo platform too. I thought that was supposed to be further down the road?

I thought the move to that platform wouldn't be 'till 2013 too...I thought they x-ed the plans for a Lincoln based-Escape too...

full of mistakes = MT

Igor
I figured as much and hoped one of you guys could chime in and verify any of what they are saying. I'm often a good 2 months ahead of them on info due to forums like these and even then the mags I read, C&D and MT, are usually both still wrong about future product. It's pretty pathetic on their part and then they write that stuff as if it's fact and get us all excited about nothing.

this magazines should be ashamed because what they do is push our spirits up and then when the time comes and the car they said wasnt build people get mad but at the automaker because the car MT wrote was coming for this year wasnt build:D and after reading that MT article that guy should be fired because he doesnt even know where to start in Fords products coming

found a blurb in an article by John McElroy about the Society of Automotive Engineers week/GTG/convention going on in Detroit currently (Autoblog linkage) that pertains to Ford's EB plans imho
...The rule of thumb being discussed in the industry is that it takes about $4,000 to get a diesel to meet U.S. emission standards, and it takes about $6,000 to convert a car to a strong hybrid. But as an engineer told me, "Let me add just $1,000 to my gasoline ICE and I'll show you what I can do to boost fuel economy."
&
so, ecoboost is turbos and injectors? Like the Cobalt SS?
sorta yes&no imho

the way I see it is most turbos so far have been about boosting (top) performance
but
EB is aimed at the overall driving experience
&
instead of boosting an already big enuf engine,
boosts one that'd be too small for much more than steady-speed cruising without the afterburners ...umm mean turbo(s)

if a little econobox with a naturally-aspirated 2 liter engine can do 120mph & cruise at 100mph
maybe
a 1.# liter could do 95 & 80 with much better mileage (lighter overall package and DI too ...and even DSG.Powershift)
and
even have better acceleration from stop or for highway passing thanks to its used-only-when-necessary turbo(s)

(tho I haven't read that last part, kinda think part of the trick to EB
is a way to separate most/non-boosted driving from OnlyWhenYouNeedIt)

I was wondering about this too. Will the ecoboost be highly controled by the computer, and really only achieve the MPGs advertised if you drive very mildly, and only achieve the HP and Torque when driven agressively, cutting the MPG by a great deal. Will the average driver see the claimed MPG. The whole advertising about power of a V8 with HP of a V6 leads me to belive that the MKs with Ecoboost 3.5 will not get any better MPG than the 3.7 standard V6. Now, if they could have offered an Ecoboost 4 cylinder, with the same power as the 3.7 V6, then I would believe it would be able to get 30 MPG highway.

not sure but think Direct Injection sorta implies a high level of computer control
&
reminded by posts elsewhere (& important imho);
think the EB's are also engineered to take advantage of various ethanol (ie alcohol) blends
which
may even have seasonal benefits
summer - use a higher E# = more hp And lower emissions
winter - use a lower E# = better cold starting when power is less useful

afaik the 'average' driver faces a considerable amount of stop&go driving, whether in-city or on rush hour freeways
so peak-acceleration could be a only an occasional mpg-drain

-- the MKS with Ecoboost 3.5 will not get any better MPG than the 3.7 standard V6...

OTOH, the 3.5EB will have 75-100(?) extra HP!!!
so if the mpg is the same as the NA 3.7, that's still quite a Plus
= the power of a v8 with FE of a 6

&
something been meaning to say and might've forgot to
the idea that future vehicles could be designed for one engine size,
relying on EB as the replacement for displacement
& therefore the entire vehicle could be built lighter/optimized/better-balanced
(wondering if this could apply to the T6-Ranger/F100/F150 too: 4cyl/v6/v8?)

All good points 2b2.
The whole idea of EB is to improve everything, not just power.

Fuel economy through technology and scaled down, lighter engines.
Power and drivability from snappy torque.
Emissions reduction through all of the technology.
Lower cost relative to hybrids and Diesels.

But Ford has other improvements and technologies coming to non EB engines as well, and some have been used before and some have not.
Ford is just marketing EB not unlike Toyota with their synergy drive.

hmmm "some have not" hmmm
why does the word -------- pop into mind?
(pre-edited with ^hyphens^ ;))

Ford is just marketing their new groundbreaking suite of technology that'll be every-bit as important as (if not more! than) that "T" brand's so-called synergy drive.
^fixed^ :D

Well, the June issue of MT states everything from this article. Why does MT think this information true? IS there a Lincoln based-Escape comming soon??
