Ford Fiesta ST Earns Popular Mechanics Excellence Award

DEARBORN – The Ford Fiesta ST was recently voted the best handling car in the Popular Mechanics 2014 Automotive Excellence Awards. Each year, Popular Mechanics editors select ten best cars and trucks from a variety of categories including design, performance and technical innovation. Representatives from the publication delivered the award to Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas, during a new hire orientation event last week.

“I do want to thank everyone at Ford, as somebody who drives cars all the time, somebody who loves cars, I’m really grateful that something like the Fiesta ST is on the market,” said Mike Austin, Popular Mechanics auto editor. “Fiesta is really special in its own right. It’s just that small, nimble fun to drive nature that we used see all over the automotive map with old GTI’s as a good example, but that car is much bigger and more expensive now, so the Fiesta ST is this kind of unique thing in the market. It has more power than anything else in its size and it’s a great deal.”

Austin went on to applaud Ford Motor Company for being brave enough to try something different by bringing the small, sporty hatch to North America.

“This is an honor for all of us,” said Hinrichs. “You know, we wouldn’t have this award-winning car in North America if we weren’t using the One Ford global strategy on platforms.”

Hinrichs added it is the goal that every Ford vehicle have a bit of that fun-to-drive spirit and he reminded the new hires in the audience that awards like this one are the result of dedicated teams working hard to deliver cars consumers desire.

“Remember, this is a fun business. We get to work together to make automobiles people love,” Hinrichs said.

According to a Popular Mechanics, Fiesta ST earned the Best Handling designation based on its affordability paired with, “just enough speed to keep life interesting.” The judges also paid homage to Fiesta ST’s easy transition from braking to cornering and the surge of power the 197-horsepower 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine delivers when you hit the gas.
