Ford Will Build a New Focus RS, Here Is the Spied Test Mule

Take a good look at the Focus in the adjacent images - from the distance, the car could pass as an ST. Ford is reportedly working on a 2015 update for the 250 hp hot hatch, but it's only a minor suspension and equipment, since the ST is a fairly fresh car and has its grille high up, like the Focus facelift.

Managing to get closer to the hatchback reveals a crucial hint that this is something meaner than the 2015 ST. Yes, those exhausts, which seems to be something suitable for Mad Max’s Ford Falcon Interceptor, point to the fact that this is actually a Focus RS test mule.

New Ford Focus RS spotted

New Ford Focus RS spotted for the first time
Auto Express

An all-new Ford Focus RS is on the way, and this looks like our very first shot of the new mega-hatch.

It looks a lot like a standard Focus ST but there’s some heavy camouflage around the rear bumper, which – if you look closely – reveals two large exhausts mounted on either side.

The current ST has a centrally mounted exhaust, suggesting that this prototype could well be the RS powertrain-testing mule that we’ve been waiting for. After all, the previous RS had two huge exhausts in each side of the rear bumper.

We’ve pretty much had confirmation from Ford that the RS is on the table, with a 2016 release date looking likely. Judging by the early stages of this prototype, that’s a timescale that seems to fit.

Chief operating officer for Ford of Europe, Barb Samardzich, told us recently of the Focus RS: “I can’t give you any confirmation today, but let’s say there’s a strong desire. Something like that makes a great halo car.” A Ford spokesman went on to say: “We have a rich heritage of RS cars and we’re not about to let any competitors overtake us in that respect.”

New Ford Focus RS engine

Sitting underneath the bonnet of this RS prototype is likely to be a version of the direct-injection 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine found in the latest Mustang line-up. There it produces 304bhp but we reckon 350bhp is more like it for the Focus RS, giving it the kind of punch it’ll need to take on models like the 355bhp Mercedes A45 AMG.

They handle the power well in the ST but in order to play with the big boys with 350HP AWD is going to be a necessity!

The Focus RS primary global competitor is the new Golf R that has AWD. So if Ford wanted any chance of competing, they would need to bring AWD to the RS as well.
The previous RS had little trouble of competing, as it was usually the one everyone tried to beat, but yes, AWD seems to be needed here with more power and a better chassis.

That is nice to hear. There were rumors about Ford using some hybrid system (FWD +electric motors for RWD) then there were rumors about FWD only.
It would be nice to see AWD...if i remember last compact from Ford with AWD was an Escort Cosworth. That was some wicked vehicle.
Now... next could be a Mondeo with AWD and 400 hp

sounds like the Nano MKZ-Sport to me

I reallyREALLY want to see something like that on Lincolns (& Mercurys), exclusively at first

imho the perfect system to scale from battery-less "E-wd" to gentle-hybrids thru forceful-hybrids to full-BEVs
