That is quite a lot of workers I am guessing this plant will be exporting them to other countries as well right?

Canada and Mexico. China, Taiwan, Russia, and Germany will take care of the rest save a few extras in NA for Louisville. Remember combined sales of Canada and Mexico can go to 5k units a month. Its Ford's second best selling model in Canada.

I'm somewhat surprised by the number of hires also

what did Ford do with the employees who used to build Explorers at Louisville? :yikes:
They were kept. This is merely adding. The plant was only at 1 shift so they needed to hire.

UAW: Ford may add 400+ workers to Michigan assembly plant - LeftlaneNews
By Mark Kleis Thursday, Jul 14th, 2011 @ 8:54 pm
The United Auto Workers Union Local 900 looks to have reason to celebrate as Ford has indicated that it may hire 400 or more workers to augment the workforce at its Wayne, Michigan, plant.

The workers would be tasked with building various components that eventually go into the Focus for assembly at the Michigan Assembly Plant, rather than adding more workers to the vehicle assembly line itself, according to a Detroit Free Press report...

...No timeline was given for when the potential hires would take place.

Ford looking to increase Canadian crossover plant to build export model - LeftlaneNews
By Andrew Ganz Thursday, Jul 14th, 2011 @ 4:36 pm
Ford Motor Company is looking to increase both the number and type of vehicles it assembles at its Oakville, Ontario, assembly plant, according to the automaker’s Canadian CEO...

...Ford has said for more than two years that it wants to capitalize on both the Oakville plant and the CD3 architecture that underpins the Edge and MKX. While no more crossovers are expected for North America – if anything, the automaker is likely to trim the number of models sold here – it has recently started exporting Canada-built Edges to China. A purpose-built export model to be sold as a premium vehicle in markets like China, Russia and the Middle East seems like a natural fit for the Oakville facility.

“We may also make some comments about Ford’s investment, but we cannot discuss it in depth, before it is official”, he said. However, he did say that this is a very large investment, over US$1.5 million, to create 2,000 additional jobs, to increase production at the State of Sonora by 50%.

Ford finishing Louisville Assembly overhaul - FreePress
11:05 AM, Sep. 14, 2011
BY JERE DOWNS, (LOUISVILLE) COURIER-JOURNAL
The “Louisville Assembly Plant” sign stretching across the front of the Fern Valley Road factory has been pressure washed for a new coat of paint.

Marble columns and the 1955-era yellow brick exterior out front will be covered in sleek aluminum panels and silver paint.

The old blue-oval Ford sign came down last week in preparation for a new one...

...they’re on schedule to start producing vehicles in December.

The redesigned Escape will be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in mid-November, Savona said. That show vehicle will be assembled in Louisville, he said, with the first production versions rolling off the line around year’s end...

...“We are transforming this plant into a facility that will be among the most flexible in the world,” Savona said. It will be capable of building the new Escape and up to five other different vehicles at once, but Ford officials won’t discuss any models beyond the Escape in public.

Yet, silver steel Ford Focus sedan bodies are poised to run down new conveyor lines in the final assembly area. They’re there just to test the automated assembly lines and the new paint shop equipment, Savona said...
