Ford may develop new models as part of Lincoln brand revival
Reuters
June 13, 2013
by Deepa Seetharaman

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) may branch out and develop new models for Lincoln in fast-growing vehicle segments as part of the second-largest U.S. automaker's latest attempt to revive the struggling luxury brand and boost its profits.

The company did not specify which vehicle segments it was targeting. But in a presentation to investors on Thursday, Ford showed in a chart that it expects the premium small-car and crossover segments to grow sharply by 2015.

Lincoln does not currently offer a small car, but a person familiar with the brand's strategy previously told Reuters that the Lincoln brand is considering a near-luxury compact sedan for 2016 or later.

At the Detroit auto show this year, Ford showed a concept version of the Lincoln MKC compact crossover that is expected to go on sale next year.

There are vehicle markets "that we're not playing in today that we can enter that are high-volume segments and growing fast," Matt VanDyke, who is in charge of Lincoln's development and day-to-day operations, said at an investor conference.

If approved, the small sedan likely would be sold in the United States and China, the world's largest auto market. It would compete against cars like General Motors Co.'s (GM.N) Cadillac ATS and the Mercedes (DAIGn.DE) CLA.

Thanks for posting that, N.R.!

my main problem with the article is I don't know anything about Deepa Seetharaman other than the name is familiar
& I don't trust most Media anyway...

the "highest volume" catch-phrase imho is more about the 3-series than anything
&
imho the ATS and coming? CLA (Fwd right?) are (so far) very different targets...segments even
so
I can't tell from the article
if a MikFocus (or my MKE) is being considered along with the (definite!) LincStang or not

I think it would be great for Lincoln to come up with their version of the ATS or 3 series etc... based on the upcoming Mustang platform. They could do a coupe, convertible and a sporty/lux sedan. But I'm wondering if Lincoln is thinking of going.... smaller. As in their version of a Buick Verano based off the Focus platform. That might do well in China and the like. I'm not sure how well that would do in the USA though. Sales of the Verano might indicate how well it would do in the US.

not sure if the following is somewhat far-fetched tho worth posting...
Jpd80 @ GMI:
"Perhaps the warm reception of that recent LWB Escort concept was a litmus test for a possible Lincoln compact sedan?
Combining the needs of Lincoln in North America and China may well mean compacts are back on the list..
That added differentiation afforded by a longer wheelbase and bigger cabin may be turning heads..."
.
I have trouble seeing a lower-priced, "Re-Tread" compact's web-success impacting Lincoln's direction that much.

The near luxury part makes me think more of a Focus based car, that should have been a Mercury.

The ATS and the gorgeous Mercedes-Benz CLA are very different target. The ATS is in the same leage that the BMW 3 series and the Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4. The CLA with the upcoming A3, are in the new battle field for the luxury carmakers, the volume sellers of the near future: a compact FWD luxury cars. I think Lincoln needs to figth in both markets, with a next Mustang based sedan and coupe to battle the ATS, C-Class and 3-series, and with a Focus based compact FWD sedan to battle the CLA, A3. But the Focus based sedan needs to have completly different body and a luxury interior to be competitive. Is not enough a new nose or grille...

It looks like Lincoln will be targeting the near-luxury CLA and A3 that are both $30k FWD sedans with a variant of the larger 2015/16 Focus platform.

But there is still the option for a larger RWD Luxury sedan based on the new Mustang platform.

That term NEAR luxury irks me because Lincoln should not be NEAR luxury it should be full luxury

Ford wants Lincoln to cover both Mercury level and Lincoln level if I read between the lines. Isn't the Titanium pkg basically what a Mercury level was? I don't think Lincoln should go down to Buick territory. Lincoln is the flagship Brand and should "reach higher". The C-sedan should target all levels of ATS, CLA etc and not lower the Lincoln standards to Buick and similar.

^ imho, Mercury *was* a bit broader than just Titanium = from the going-away-SEL to base current-Lincolns
tho
for Mercury's RETURN think it's both very simple yet complicated to explain
(see Mission2020)

AND the Leftlane article Jose posted today,
"Lincoln hasn't specified which fast-growing segments it's targeting"
actually
they HAVE to a degree
•"Highest Selling Lux Segment" is the RWD 3-series/C-class/ATS/IS
so that's definite (more-than-imho) and will be S550-based
+ up&comers:
• MKC
& maybe(still)
• F-(Awd?) CLA...BUT practically no proof FLincMoCo has decided HOW to approach it

re: the LincStang-thru-Continental
I haven't been convinced the old "Mustang won't/can't grow" adage has changed
which
is why I came up with the modular approach: S550 frontend + CD4+3 passenger compartment
of the CD4+3 Fwd/RWD POLL

wescoent from GM Inside News said:
It was canceled. It's possible Lincoln is considering developing a compact sedan, but it most certainly will not be based on the Focus.

The compact luxury sedan segment is an idiotic place for Lincoln to be fielding an entry. Sure, it's high volume, but it's extremely crowded, and there isn't a whole lot of opportunity to make money or field a truly differentiated entry.

Lincoln needs 2 or 3 new models beyond its current line, but I don't think this is the place to do it. Aside from a highly stylistic derivative of the Mustang, of course, I maintain I'd love to see Lincoln do something at the total opposite end of the spectrum.
Wescoent doesn't believe the compact sedan will be FWD.

Would you like to chime in wings? :D

I'm kinda too busy to do GMI just now, N.R....

Did wescoent say anything more about,
"I maintain I'd love to see Lincoln do something at the total opposite end of the spectrum."
?
Does he mean a large sedan / TC-replacement?

frequently for me, his posts are more ambiguous than imho he even intends them to be

No, he posted a picture of a Super Duty. He wants to see a Super Duty based Lincoln. He said the idea has floated around before, but I think that was way before the Lincoln reinvention kicked off.

awwright

this junk is starting to look like EnemyAction

QUOTE MT: "MKC...
...The next vehicle in the lineup is reportedly a small luxury sedan that could be patterned to take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and even the Cadillac ATS."
now they're just trying to confuse us!

UNLESS
my MKElectrified is gonna sneak in there between the very-early-2014 MKC and the not-quite-so-early-2014 MKX

If Lincoln showed a breathtaking concept like the Ciel that would be amazing, doubt it tho, it may just be the production MKC
