Unlike February, March is actually one of the biggest selling months for the global automotive industry as a whole. This showed up for Ford as well as many of the company’s vehicles set new records.

Ford North America
The biggest news to come out of US was Ford outselling GM for only the second time in a non-strike year in decades. This was lead by huge gains from the F-Series, Explorer, and Fusion. The new Fiesta had its best month yet with sales almost reaching 10k units. The worldwide success of the Fiesta can only be realized once you get the global figure however. In the latter days of the month, the all-new Ford Focus launched to strong sales. Look for improvements as the year goes on.

Ford Canada sales once again gained share and stayed on top of GM as well. Gains from the F-Series and all-new Explorer lead the way after a minor hiccup in February caused sales to slow. The Fiesta also saw a new sales record in Canada as well with sales topping 1,000 units for the first time.

Ford Europe
Even though Ford lost market share in the European region in March again, it gained in profitability. According to Ford’s Q1 earning results, Ford Europe’s profit doubled. This proved that Ford’s plan of not pouring on the incentives as other automakers have done is a recipe for lasting success in the region and will serve it well in the next few years as Europe turns over all their current products with new or all-new vehicles.

The all-new Focus also launched in Europe during March, but in limited areas and body styles. Many major nations did not receive their first sales until April including Germany. The Focus wagon will also not be available until May.

The Ford Fiesta might have been down due to the hangover from clunker programs last year, but that did not stop it from being the best selling sub-compact car in Europe. The all-new C-Max also continued its great start as sales climbed to around 15,000 for the first time in years.

Ford South America
Sales in Brazil were down in March compared to a year ago following the industry. They were, however, better than January and February with Fiesta sales climbing past the 10k mark.

The EcoSport is unstoppable in Argentina. Sales are continuing over the 2k mark for the first three months of this year. This bodes well for an all-new EcoSport, which launches in less than a year.

Ford Asia Pacific and Africa
The Fiesta is having a terrific effect on Ford’s sales in Southeast Asia with many countries reporting over 100% sales gains like Indonesia which reported an even 200% gain. With a new Focus, Ranger, and Everest all launching by the end the next year, things look bright for the region.

Ford China saw a sales leap in March as it gained much needed market share in the world’s biggest auto market. This was helped by the Fiesta, which saw an all-time sales record for the country even though Chinese government incentives on small vehicles like the Fiesta ended in February. JMC sales also caught on fire with the new Yusheng SUV launching.

The biggest news out of China was the new Mondeo. Launched in the second half of the month, sales burst past the 8,000 mark for the first time. In what must be a major internal recognition achievement for Ford, over 6,000 of those sales came from the 2.0 EcoBoost engine. This is by far the biggest accomplishment for the new line of engines since their introduction.

Ford India once again set sales over the 10,000 mark. The first time this happened was in January. The sales’ ceiling was of course is direct due to the massive sales that the Figo set. This propelled the Figo to over 10,000 sales as South Africa set a new sales record for the cheap sub-compact.

Markets included in this month were Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
