via TTAC: ...now that Polestar is in the business of building its own standalone models, crossovers and sedans just won’t cut it. For its first Polestar-badged model, the new automaker wants a big, fast coupe.
According to Britain’s Autocar, the brand’s first model will be a sporty coupe, possibly bound for a September reveal at the Frankfurt Auto Show...

Polestar plots 600bhp coupe for inaugural model
Volvo's performance arm is now a standalone brand and a fast two-door coupé, as well as a second model, are being considered

AutoCar.co.UK
- Richard Bremner - 13 July 2017

Volvo’s relaunched Polestar division is considering at least one, and possibly two, bespoke performance models with their own bodystyles.

One of these vehicles is understood to be a coupé featuring a high carbonfibre content and a powertrain with around 600bhp. The nature of the second model is unknown.

Volvo relaunched Polestar as a standalone brand last week and confirmed none of its models will wear the Volvo badge. The coupé is tipped to be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Suggesting that Polestar’s cars will be heavily based on existing Volvo models, rather than pure standalone vehicles, a Volvo statement said: “Polestar will enjoy specific technological and engineering synergies with Volvo Cars and benefit from significant economies of scale as a result of its connection to Volvo. These synergies will allow it to design, develop and build world-beating electrified highperformance cars.”

However, the investment by Volvo and parent company Geely in two flexible platform architectures for all of its large and small cars does raise the possibility of Polestar developing models that are heavily bespoke. The new S60 saloon, due next year, is one candidate for morphing into a Polestar-only coupé.

Engineering more power will be quite a task, but developing a more bespoke Polestar model is an even bigger commitment and comes at a time when Volvo’s development programme is flat-out.

But there’s no question that an individual Polestar model would generate far more impact than tuned mainstream models, impressive though some of these have already been, and it would make better use of the Polestar operation.

More ambitious plans for Polestar have been under development since Volvo bought the racing and performance tuning brand outright in mid-2015.

Its bespoke models would be powered by hybrid drivetrains. Volvo and Polestar insiders have already confirmed that the brand intends to specialise in high-performance petrol-electric drivetrains.

Hybrid drivetrains will also be used for the high-performance versions of Volvo’s mainstream range, partly to underline the marque’s commitment to plug-in hybrid technology and partly to further distinguish its offerings from those of Mercedes-AMG, BMW’s M division and Audi’s RS brand.

To achieve the 600bhp target, Polestar will need to extract a lot more from the plug-in hybrid drivetrain currently fitted to the XC90 T8, whose supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol produces 324bhp and 295lb ft alongside the 81bhp and 177lb ft of an electric motor.

There’s scope for producing a more powerful electric motor, if at the potential expense of range. Polestar insiders have already suggested that some range might be traded for performance.

In a further move that underlines just how keen the company is to differentiate itself from rivals such as BMW M, Audi Sport and Mercedes-AMG, Thomas Ingenlath, formerly Volvo design chief, will become Polestar’s boss. Ingenlath will be joined at Polestar by new chief operating officer Jonathan Goodman, who switches from being Volvo’s communications chief.

Hard to say, maybe Ford will skip the IAA, as they did last years Paris Auto Show.

At least nine brands will not attend the next Frankfurt Motor Show in September, amongst which Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Nissan and Volvo. That is what Automotive News Europe and sister publication Automobilwoche gathered. The IAA’s organiser VDA has confirmed that some car makers have cancelled their participation, without giving names.

Leaked Documents Show Nissan Leaf Will Undercut Model 3, Bolt EV Price
AutoVerdict
- Nick Saporito - August 9, 2017

...Autobytel has pulled the documents from their website, but AutoBlog snapped them and still has them live for viewing. In addition to showing a base price of $29,990 for the Leaf S, it also confirms the battery capacity as 40-kWh. At 40-kWh, the Leaf's pack is coming in under both Model S and Bolt EV, but above today's Leaf.
(but under the 50kWh battery of the lowest Tesla Model 3...which goes into production NEXT Year)

The documents also show the new Leaf will have 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, a huge jump from today's car, which has 107 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque...

2018 BMW X4 revealed without camouflage – UPDATE
CarAdvice.com.AU
- Mike Stevens - Today

UPDATE: New shots from this photo set have arrived in our inbox. See article and gallery for more.

The new-generation 2018 BMW X4 has been spied without a shred of camouflage this week, caught in transit to destinations unknown – although a Frankfurt motor show stand next month is likely to be on the timetable.

These images, posted to enthusiast community xbimmers by user ‘Palbay’ (facebook page), offer the first clear look at the latest iteration of the new BMW X3 SUV’s coupe-inspired companion.

Like the still relatively new first-generation X4 – introduced in 2014 – and the larger X6, the new 2018 X4 will wear a face largely identical to its more practical stablemate, while featuring a long tapered roofline and a short rear deck.

The new X4’s tail lamps show a more slender design than before, with this high-spec M40d example already drawing a few comparisons on xbimmer.com to the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe – the X4’s direct rival in the Mercedes camp.

For more on the new BMW X4, see our coverage at the links before – including what looks to be the first glimpse of a top-shelf X4 M flagship model.

Although not yet confirmed, we expect to see the new X4 in Frankfurt next month.

This would be a 2019, not a 2018, which are already on lots (I test drove one last week).

They had a 2017 X4 M40i (or whatever they call it) demo with 4K miles on it in a color I loved that I might've gotten if they would have given a good deal. He'd only give me 5K off sticker for it.

Mini Electric Concept revealed:
Cooper EV coming in 2019
CarAdvice.com.AU
- James Wong - Today

The Mini Electric Concept has been unveiled ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt motor show next month, previewing the all-electric production model due in 2019.

Finished in an eye-catching matte-silver paintwork with contrasting yellow accents – which harks back to the original Mini E of 2008 – the Mini Electric Concept is still unmistakably recognisable as a Mini, though is distinguished from its more conventionally-powered brethren thanks to its closed grille and full-LED headlight treatments, 19-inch wheels with fiberglass inserts, and the company’s plug-shaped ‘E’ badge throughout the exterior...

...At the rear, the flat tailgate differs from the current production models that incorporate three-dimensional badges and licence plate holders. The rear of the Mini Electric Concept also sees new LED tail-lights that each form half of the UK’s Union Jack as part of their dot matrix...

...Stay tuned to CarAdvice for our coverage of the 2017 Frankfurt motor show for more details.

Kia to unveil stunning fastback concept at 2017 Frankfurt autoshow
MotorAuthority
- Viknesh Vijayenthiran - Aug 30, 2017

...Set to debut next month at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show, we’re sad to report the concept doesn’t preview a new model line. Rather, it signals a new body style for one of the Korean brand’s existing models, specifically the next-generation Cee’d compact car.

In a statement, Kia said the concept hints at design elements bound for the new Cee’d which goes on sale in Europe in 2018. The new Cee’d will be closely related to Hyundai’s Elantra/i30 and should include familiar hatchback and wagon body styles, and potentially a five-door fastback...

2018 Porsche Cayenne Debuts As Company Says Its More 911-Like Than Ever

Porsche has officially unveiled the 2018 Cayenne ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Looking instantly recognizable, the redesigned crossover has an evolutionary front fascia with larger air intakes and new LED headlights. The familiar styling continues further back but Porsche says the Cayenne has a lower roofline which helps to give it a more athletic stance. Other notable changes include larger alloy wheels and new taillights that echo those of the Panamera Sport Turismo.

Bigger changes occur in the cabin as drivers will find a new center console which has a mix of analogue and digital controls. A more noticeable feature is the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system which has internet connectivity.

AMG Proyect One hypercar concept in Frankfurt

Mercedes-Benz and AMG confirmed that a concept version of the new AMG hypercar, the proyect One, will be in Frankfurt. The Proyect One will show the progress in hybrid tech. This car will be a halo car for the Mercedes-Benz brand, like the GT for Ford, or the NSX for Honda/Acura.

I've always thought the MKX's center strip should've been thinner like the concept was.

If that was Borg's point, then I'd agree. Otherwise, I also agree that it's nothing spectacular that is the be-all end-all for full width taillights.

That'd be even worse - trying to say a rendering of a concept is the way to do it.

Re: AMG Proyect One hypercar concept in Frankfurt

Underpinings/mechanicals look interesting.

Power of the Project One will be provided by a 1.6-liter turbo V6 with hybrid assistance, derived from Mercedes-AMG’s 2015 W06 Hybrid Formula One car. Naturally, the system will be*thoroughly revised for use on the road, and Mercedes promises it will last 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometers) between rebuilds, despite its predicted rev limit of above 10,000 rpm. Supported by two electric motors directly and two more located on the front axle, the hybrid system has an output of “over 1000 horsepower.”

Re: AMG Proyect One hypercar concept in Frankfurt

I wonder how we define "Halo Car" going forward. I thought a halo car was supposed to attract buyers into dealer showrooms but I could be wrong. In any case, can we put the Ford GT, the Acura NSX and this upcoming AMG Proyect One into the same category?

The Ford GT was a homologation special that was designed to commemorate earlier LeMans victories. IIRC, The FIA allowed it to race, under a special arrangement, before it was produced for sale. It will never appear for sale on a Ford dealers floor, all copies having been ordered before production.

The NSX appears to be intended to be a true showroom attraction.

This AMG may be a limited-edition technology demonstrator that may never be seen at MB dealers.

I don't know. All I know is that Lincoln needs a "Halo Car" of some sort however it is defined.

Lincoln need a halo car ASAP. A very special type of halo car. Something different, not offered by others luxury brands. What? I don't know. But I think must be something that attract young people. This could be a very disruptive style, some new communication or connective technology, an interesting powerplant ( electric, hybrid ?) , an innovative body style (a high ride sedan or Coupe?) , I don't know exactly what kind of novelty needs Lincoln to offer, but clearly they need to do something to make noise in the luxury market and make the brand desired again.

So I guess this could be a spiritual successor to the CLK GTR?

Re: AMG Proyect One hypercar concept in Frankfurt

As an unashamed 13th/Gen X'er, I would love to see a full size, 4 wheel drive, next generation cd6 platformed, extended wheelbase, four-coach-door, (BMW type hard top) convertible, with a Lincoln exclusive 3.0 liter hybrid v6 or Lincoln exclusive v8, dispensing 600+ horsepower starting at a very American $70,000 and moving up to $105,000 depending on the options! >:):cool:0:)

Nissan Leaf's 60 kWh Battery Option Could Deliver 225+ Miles Of Range

The decision to use such a small battery enabled the automaker to price the model at $29,990 before incentives but it seemed like an odd choice considering its key rivals offer a significantly longer range. In particular, the entry-level Tesla Model 3 can travel up to 220 miles (354 km) on a single charge while the Chevrolet Bolt can go 238 miles (383 km).

Nissan will correct this shortcoming next year when the automaker will introduce an option for a 60 kWh battery pack. The company didn't say much about the model but Nissan's Executive Vice President of global sales and marketing reportedly told Forbes contributor Bertel Schmitt the car will have a range in excess of 225 miles (360 km).
