Gasoline Vs. Diesel: Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost Vs. Fiesta 1.6 TDCi

With a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel under the hood, the engine emits a clearly audible knocking sound, but keeps a low profile in the fuel consumption department. Although it gets nowhere near its reported average of 3.6 liters per 100km according to EU measuring standards, at 5.3 liters per 100km its fuel economy is nevertheless nothing to sneeze at. Particularly considering that the 1.6 TDCi lacks a start-stop system. For an additional 900 euros, start-stop is a feature of the ECOnetic version, however.

Small and fuel-efficient, but not underpowered: This is Ford’s approach with regard to its successful Fiesta subcompact. With a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel under the hood, the engine emits a clearly audible knocking sound, but keeps a low profile in the fuel consumption department. Although it gets nowhere near its reported average of 3.6 liters per 100km according to EU measuring standards, at 5.3 liters per 100km its fuel economy is nevertheless nothing to sneeze at. Particularly considering that the 1.6 TDCi lacks a start-stop system. For an additional 900 euros, start-stop is a feature of the ECOnetic version, however.

The Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost, meanwhile, comes with start-stop as a standard feature, but the turbocharged 998cc requires high revs in order to push forward nimbly and consumes almost two liters more per 100km on average than the EU standard as a result. At 6.2 liters per 100km according to our test it is nevertheless among the most frugal engines available for a subcompact. What’s more, the Fiesta EcoBoost impresses with its range of 677km. The diesel underscores its suitability for long trips with almost 80km more, but the gasoline version’s higher towing capacity speaks in its favor.


What’s more, the 100PS gasoline-powered engine accelerates faster than the diesel. 0-100km is achieved on 10.7, which is 0.5 seconds quicker than what Ford claims in its spec sheet. The 95PS diesel, meanwhile, requires an additional second, and performs exactly how Ford claims it does.


Of major importance for everyday use is low-end torque. The diesel is at a clear advantage in this regard, and it underscores this with its tested elasticity: The diesel requires approximately two second less than the gasoline-powered Fiesta to accelerate from 60 to 120km/h, and needs about three seconds less to accelerate from 80 to 120km/h. What’s more, thanks to its additional 30Nm of maximum torque, the 1.6-liter TDCi can be driven in a more relaxed fashion than the gasoline version. At less than 2,000rpm the EcoBoost seems a bit sluggish and demands more frequent shifting. But the gasoline variant’s top speed is 180km/h on the highway, while the diesel’s max is 175km/h.


What’s more the gasoline engine is not overly noisy: In neutral, there are three decibels between it and the TDCi engine, but on the road the diesel is also noisier in the inside. One exception: When stepping down on the EcoBoost variant’s accelerator, the tachometer quickly approaches the red line with a roar. Otherwise, at 130km/h, both Fords are similarly noisy in the interior at 70 decibels.


In the pricing department, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost is only 895 euros cheaper than the 1.6 TDCi, which costs 16,445 euros. But taxes are higher for the diesel, which means its additional cost is offset after a moderate 9,500km.


VERDICT


The 1.6 TDCi impresses in the Ford Fiesta with its low consumption and torque. But the smooth-running and quiet 1.0 EcoBoost wins the comparison test. In addition to its lower price, the lower taxes and residuals speak in its favor.

Interesting article. But since North America will get the 125hp 1.0L EcoBoost, the acceleration will be better, along with more torque.
