GM readying aluminum-body fullsize pickups

Ford's extensive use of aluminum in its 2015 F-150 is a big deal. A really big deal. Big enough, in fact, that General Motors is reportedly changing its fullsize pickup strategy. According to The Wall Street Journal, The General has locked in partnerships with Alcoa Inc. and Novelis Inc. – companies that will supply aluminum for the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks.

"Ford's introduction of the 2015 F-150 pickup truck was a game changer, and it's the first, not the last, conversion of this type," Novelis spokesperson Charles Belbin told the Journal. The switch to aluminum has allowed Ford to shave roughly 700 pounds off its fullsize truck's curb weight.

GM's new trucks are little more than evolutions over the past generation in both platform and propulsion. As much gnashing of teeth that we do here regarding the 'Gator/Expedition I think the fact that GM has taken such a conservative path with their trucks is even more embarrassing. Even third wheel Ram has added a small diesel to their medium duty trucks. GM has seven more years of playing second, or even third fiddle when it comes to selling modern trucks.

I bet all those GM fans who were calling Ford out for using Aluminum are feeling pretty silly right now

This is a ridiculous statement to make when your full-size trucks are in a sales spiral. 2018 is still 4 years away.

this also could mean that the next gen SUVs could be All aluminum and the next gen Navigator and Expedition will be all aluminum before the GM products, this is one positive thing as a result of this refreshes

I suggested this in another thread a while back... but say 'Hybrid' to random people in the street, and 9 out of 10 will respond 'Toyota'. There is alot to be said for being first, and Ford will be first with an all-aluminum body in a mass-market vehicle... and they will reap the rewards of that position for years and years to come.
