JANUARY 09, 2012
Carscoop

And the winning entries for the 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year are the Hyundai Elantra and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque respectively. The announcement was made today on the sidelines of the 2012 Detroit Motor Show.
The winners for each category were chosen by a jury of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

This is the second time that Hyundai has won the award, the first being with the Genesis sedan in 2009. The jurors gave the Elantra 174 points, versus 161 for the Passat and the 155 for the Focus, which were the two other finalists.

Kind of surprised about the Evoque, I have heard a lot of bad reviews for it.

I'm assuming they voted on pricing. The ride, interior quality and superior performance of the Focus over the Elantra and Passat is obvious. Even the pro foreign show 'Motorweek' thought the Focus was exceptional in its class. The ergonomics of the interior on the Elantra is so all plastic. Compare the Focus interior to the Passat's 1980's retro bland slidebar dash, used on most economy vehicles, and there is no comparison. Were the judges mostly Asian..since Asians are always bias towards Americans. Maybe they had an open bar near the Elantra/Passat exhibits.
Seriously, it had to be price. The Elantra doesn't even have a spare tire..it uses a glue induced compressor to fill the flat...unless its a side cut...and then you need to take a long walk for help.
