Kia Optima will spawn to do station wagon and coup? - AutoTen.com

With an eye towards growing its global market share, Kia is considering wagon and coupe variants of its all-new Optima sedan. Kia officially unveiled the new Optima – a cousin to the Hyundai Sonata — earlier this year at the New York Auto Show.

Speaking with the UK’s Autocar, Kia head designer Peter Schreyer revealed he “would love to do station wagon and coup? versions” of the Optima. Schreyer added: “The station wagon would only really work for Europe but the coup? would work in the U.S.”

Given Schreyer’s comments and the fact that Americans don’t buy station wagons in large quantities, we don’t suspect that Kia would attempt to sell a wagon version of the Optima in the U.S. However, a coupe variant of the Optima could help Kia better establish itself as a sporty marque, while also giving the brand an answer for the Honda Accord Coupe and Nissan Altima Coupe.

The 2011 Kia Optima sedan will roll into dealer showrooms in the coming months, but no word on when wagon and coupe variants might surface.
