DETROIT, Feb 21 (Reuters) - A major Ford Motor Co. (F.N: Quote, Profile , Research) retailer is struggling to lower its inventory of the No. 2 U.S. automaker's vehicles following the dramatic slide in sales of Ford F-Series pickup trucks, but it still sees the F-Series leading the segment again.

Earl Hesterberg, chief executive of Group 1 Automotive Inc.(GPI.N: Quote, Profile , Research), said on Wednesday the company had 113 days' supply of Ford vehicles at the end of the fourth quarter, far higher than the 97 days' supply of vehicles from General Motors Corp.(GM.N: Quote, Profile , Research) or 68 days' supply of DaimlerChrysler AG's (DCXGn.DE: Quote, Profile , Research) Chrysler Group vehicles.

"The Ford sales, particularly truck sales, fell off far more than we expected," Hesterberg said on a conference call after the company posted lower fourth-quarter results. "We can no longer afford to continue to carry these 90-plus day supplies on one or more of the domestic brands."
