Lincoln taps McConaughey for Continental ad campaign
Autonews

The ads feature the 2017 Continental sedan on a glacial plain, shallow water and other unique terrain.

Ford Motor Co. will begin airing its first commercials for the Lincoln Continental, featuring actor Matthew McConaughey, later this month.

The automaker’s latest television spots were filmed in Reykjavik, Iceland, and directed by Wally Pfister, who has worked on movies including “Inception,” “The Dark Knight,” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” The ads feature the 2017 Continental sedan on a glacial plain, shallow water and other unique terrain.

“It’s fresh, contemporary and very visual,” John Emmert, Lincoln group marketing manager, said in a statement. “While many are familiar with the Continental nameplate, we wanted them to see our all-new flagship in a whole new way. A car as iconic as Continental could only be shot in a unique locale -- one not familiar to viewers.”

In one ad, called “Entrance,” the company emphasizes the Continental’s exterior. Another, called “Crafted,” highlights the flagship sedan’s roomy backseat.

“You might not ever just stand there, lookin' at it,” McConaughey says in the commercial. “I mean, you may never even sit in the back seat. That’d be a shame.”

The Continental features a spacious rear meant to cater to the Chinese market, in which wealthy businesspeople and other luxury car buyers are often chauffeured around. The car comes with a switch that lets the rear passenger move the front passenger seat forward for extra legroom.

Nice to see them showing off the rear seat a little that will be a big selling point.

Nice. That color and wheel combo is delightful. Really looks like the concept.

I wish they'd show the car (the parts where you can see the full 3/4 views) for a split second longer.

Best Matty commercial they've done, I like it!
The less he talks the better. I like the silent ones with the MKX and the smooth jazz in the background.

I like the "that's Continental, this is Lincoln" tag at the end as well.

Decent commercial, but I'm not buying Matthew Mcconaughey; I wish they showed more of the car for more than a split second per frame.

Lincoln Uses Beauty, Drama and Authenticity for New Continental Campaign with Matthew McConaughey

Dec-19-2016

...“Entrance,” a new television spot for the “That’s Continental” campaign featuring McConaughey was shot on a glimmering glacial plain about 160 miles from Reykjavik, Iceland, with black sand and shallow water offset by a stunning, dark horizon.

The ads were directed by acclaimed Academy Award-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister, known for “The Dark Knight” and the “The Dark Knight Rises.”

According to Jon Pearce, global chief creative officer for Hudson Rouge – the agency that works with Lincoln to produce the television commercials – the Icelandic terrain provides an unforgettable framework for such an impressive car.

Pearce said the conditions were extreme with the crew conducting shoots in raw, unpredictable temperatures and driving rain. But then rainbows would light up the sky.

LINCOLN USES BEAUTY, DRAMA AND AUTHENTICITY FOR NEW CONTINENTAL CAMPAIGN WITH MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY
Lincoln
- The Lincoln Motor Company traveled to Iceland to shoot new television spots for its flagship vehicle, the 2017 Lincoln Continental
- The pieces – directed by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister – vary in tone
- Timeless, elegant, luxuriously quiet Lincoln Continental offers first-class travel

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 19, 2016 – The Lincoln Motor Company traveled to the edge of the Earth to find a backdrop dazzling enough to introduce its timeless, elegant flagship vehicle – the all-new 2017 Lincoln Continental.

“Entrance,” a new TV spot for the “That’s Continental” campaign featuring Matthew McConaughey, was shot on a shimmering glacial plain about 160 miles from Reykjavík, Iceland, with black sand and shallow water offset by a stunning, stark horizon.

This new ad campaign is incredibly important to Lincoln. “It’s fresh, contemporary and very visual,” says John Emmert, group marketing manager, The Lincoln Motor Company.

“While many are familiar with the Continental nameplate, we wanted them to see our all-new flagship in a whole new way,” he continues. “A car as iconic as Continental could only be shot in a unique locale – one not familiar to viewers.”

The ads were directed by acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister, known for “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” Pfister’s work on “Inception” landed him an Academy Award in 2011.

The Icelandic terrain provides an unforgettable framework for such an impressive car, says Jon Pearce, global chief creative officer for Hudson Rouge.

The conditions were extreme, he recalls, with the crew conducting shoots in raw, unpredictable temperatures and driving rain. But then rainbows would light up the sky. “The clouds would break, the winds would die down, and it would become absolutely beautiful,” says Pearce.

“Entrance” is one of several unconventional spots featuring McConaughey, each of which highlights a distinct quality of the Lincoln Continental. This piece showcases a dramatic, sweeping view of the front of the flagship vehicle.

Some segments of “That’s Continental” were shot in Los Angeles.

“Crafted,” another piece in the campaign, offers a wry take on nontraditional storytelling. And for the first time in a Lincoln ad, McConaughey is featured in the back seat to showcase some of the rear seat amenities available for Continental, including a chauffeur switch. The feature allows a passenger in the rear to move the front passenger seat forward for extra legroom.

View “Crafted” here.

Each narrative stands alone, says Emmert, but a common thread throughout deconstructs any preconceived notions viewers may hold about Lincoln – and the all-new Continental.

“That’s Continental” will begin airing Dec. 31.

A New Lincoln and New Continental. In a couple of the shots it 'looked' like the Continental is drifting, impressing the concept of being big, bold and powerful.

Pretty daring to shoot the commercial where any vehicle...even a Mack truck would look small.

First in a series. I hope they do much better in the next one. Not a big fan of this one.
I liked the combo :60 sec spot. But what was odd to me is that when he mentions not ever sitting in the back seat, in the next scene he was already in the cross legged recline saying it would be a shame............but in the next scene, they have him reclining the chair and crossing his leg. Just looks like an error, once you have seen the ad a dozen or more times...lol.

It's almost like an afterthought or executive decision someone made to add the comment about it being a shame scene, without being the one who envisioned the entire storyline of the ad. But possibly deleted another interior shot, like the rear center console with the controls(maybe pressing the massage button).

I think he needed to cross his leg, press massage and then say that it would be a shame.

But I think both will be really good ads, and present the Continental very well in 2017.
