As you all know, Mercury was designed to be a bridge between Ford and Lincoln. The Ford brand instead starting overlapping Lincoln and there was no gap. My 2006 Milan has more style than the 2006 Fusion. That is why I bought it. However, I do not think Ford could continue to produce clones of each other. Fusion, Milan, Zephyr (MKZ) or Escape, Mariner, Mazda Tribute. Instead, they should have made Mercury a niche brand.
How about a 2 door coupe with convertible option or take Flex out of Ford and put into Mercury, with some re-designs, etc, etc. I am sure this has all been discussed before, but this is my opinion.
Sales would be far too low to justify investment in them, especially the vehicles you mentioned, just to support a brand name.

I'm thinking that this is the START of a lineup, not the full proposal

You are probably right. Also, Mulally wanted a limited number of platforms with more sharing. There would have been no room for unique specialty vehicles.

Thanks for the support. I will just keep plugging for Mercury.

There is a guy down the street from me who owns 3 Milans. I think he already owned one and then bought 2 more when Mercury was discontinued.

This might make @2b2 cry but I was curious if the Mercury vehicles website was still up last time I looked it showed similar Ford or Lincoln products you could buy in place of the lineup and when I looked yesterday it got updated to something I wasn't quite expecting!

Toyota Launches GR Sub-Brand
AutoVerdict
- Nick Saporito - Sept 20, 2017

Toyota has announced an entire lineup of new vehicles for Japan as part of a new sub-brand. Dubbed the GR models, the new lineup will commence the use of GR as Toyota’s performance sub-brand. Despite the sporty intentions, there’s not a lot of performance modifications on the GR lineup though.

So far Toyota has rolled out the GR trim only in Japan, but last week confirmed plans to launch the Yaris GRMN in Europe, suggesting the GR lineup will ultimately take on a global presence. The formula with GR appears to be, well, really simple. Toyota is focusing most of its efforts on upping the ante of sportiness inside and outside the models, while offering up one or two minor performance upgrades. Most models are getting revised suspension tuning...

edit: REALLY?!?

Toyota’s GR-series passenger cars...
Gazoo Racing, the automaker’s motorsport division and new in-house performance arm...
Interestingly, Gazoo literally means “image” in Japanese...

hoonable maniacs ...like... the supercharged Yaris GRMN (Gazoo Racing Masters of Nürburgring) with over 200 horsepower is a prime example...

Among them is the bewildering Prius Prime GR Sport, a hot hatch variant of the economy-minded hybrid. Toyota has officially lost its mind...

96...
so some posts elsewhere got me to try applying "combination reduction"
like I'd used for Mission2020...

specifically 'tailoring':
• interior colors to exterior colors
• drivetrains to trim-themes
• features by trim-theme with (little-to-)no options
THE HITCH:
NOT cutting-down on build-variants per se but LIMITING the '''Orderable Combinations'''

10 paints overall
but not on every trim/drivetrain
ruby, burgundy, blacK, silver, met.White, OXfordW, graY, GreeN, deepBlue, medSteelBlue
6 interiors but Only 1 or 2 choices (dk/lt pairs) per paint color/trim
Multi-dark-Carbon, 'Beige' / blacK±deepBlue, tan / red+blacK, ceramic(almost white)
3 trims, 4 drivetrains ...2 high/2 low/all for mid-trim
— –
Top Trim Leather
drivetrains ———— paint colors —————– interiors # of combos
2.3T Awd - rby brg K sl W grY dBlue Steel - Kred, crm - 14
Energi ?wd —— brg K sl W GN dBlue ——— KBl, crm — 12

Mid Trim part-Leather OR alcantara/vinyl
2.3T Awd - brg K sl W grY dBlue Steel - Kred, tan, KBl - 12
Energi ?wd — brg K sl W GN dBlue ———— tan, KBl — 11
Hybrid Fwd - brg K sl W* OX GN dBlue —-— tan, KBl — 12
1.5T Fwd — brg K sl W* OX grY dBlue ——— tan, KBl — 11
_________________* extra cost
Base Trim cloth/vinyl
1.5T Fwd ——— brg* K sl OX grY dBlue* —–— MC, Bg — 12
Hybrid Fwd —— rby* K sl OX GN dBlue* ——— MC, Bg — 12

Trims=Leather-match instead cloth
Climate Control & ventilated/powered fronts seats
Vista-moonroof instead of none
better entertainment gizmos instead of worse
more nannies instead of fewer/none
fog lamps plus interior Ambient Lighting instead of none
$25,999- / $27,999k- -$32,999k / -$35,999 ?

What if the Focus was only available as the ST and Platinum versions?
Maybe they really want to sell less voulume at a premium. Shipping low end cars which barely break even does not make sense.
The 26 could go up, if and when the RS comes back.

^ TY for a fresh viewpoint, Logan! :thumb:
tho
guess I just don't believe in frosting without the cake
nonetheless, going UPscale:

7 paints overall, but not on every trim/drivetrain
red, blacK, silver, Blue, GreeN, graY, met.White
OTOH, there's no reason Europe and China couldn't have different shades of the shared colors, so 12?
7 interiors, mostly Only 1 per paint color
blacK+red&Blue graphics / +with tan-inserts / blacK+rorB inserts, white+blacK inserts / rorB + blacK inserts
5 trims = 5 drivetrains

_EUROPE_
RS Trim
- Leather
drivetrains ———— paint colors ————— interiors # of combos
2.3T Awd ———— red K, slv Blue ———— rorB +K ——— 4

ST Trim - part-Leather/alcantara
2.0T Awd —— red K, slv Blue, grY W —— K+rorB; w+K — 6

__CHINA__

from Navi Review thread
I'm not so against Mariner despite its Mercury association. Mercury is not coming back (Sorry, 2b2) so why waste a good, Ford patented name when the theme is, indeed, travel.

As a career pilot, I noted that the term "avigate" was once floated as a distinguisher from "navigate" but the new term never caught on. Earlier on, the term "aviator" (not "avigator") did catch on as a distinguisher from "navigator" but that's what makes English what it is; our illogical, ever-evolving mother-tongue.

Since Lincoln is free to use any first letter in its naming scheme, the field for the MKC and MKZ is wide open. Admiral, anyone? Admirals outrank Commodores any day.

Astronaut?
Argonaut?

Oops. Getting off-topic.
minor clarificationing

Mercurys are definitely NOT current being built
but
imho (IMHO) saying "nEVER" is confusing (like many IN the auto industry) 'Brand' with 'Nameplate' or "sales channel"

something CALLED a Mercury could be put on sale ToMorrow
OR
a parts-bin solution that's been 'off-the-table' could easily be brought out within MONTHS
OR
the white/white-ish space vehicles that are ALREADY being worked on could get reNamed with the stroke of a pen
whenever a suit wants to
OR
Fomoco could already be building and selling Mercurys that are blatantly MIS-Badged, ie
they're Mercurys in ALL but Name

inspired by elsewhere, gonna hafta come up with a "heli-nanny" version for the new/young drivers
& fading old drivers:
-
every safety gizmo
- no sound system/L.Welk-only
- super-simple controls = Ø distractions
- LARGE-PRINT HUD
- machine-washable seating surfaces...
:angel ... may as well add adjustable ht. suspension for visibility & ease of E/E

Watch This Electric Ford Sneak Geezers Out For A Night Of Fun
How to spark up your life with an electric conversion
https://insideevs.com/watch-this-electric-ford-sneak-geezers-out-night-fun/

Funny how a bit of high voltage can put spark back into both old men and old cars. Take the two codgers in the video above. Despite the best efforts of time to grind their existence into lifeless routine, a classic car — brought back to life with the help of large battery and an electric motor — allows them to sneak away from their managed community, and turn the old couple into a pair of thrill-seeking, young-on-the-inside guys.

This Mercury Coupe Is The Electric Sleeper Of Our Dreams

ICON DEBUTS “DERELICT” 1949 MERCURY COUPE WITH PIONEERING EV CONVERSION AT SEMA 2018

Jonathan Ward Continues To Infuse Vintage Styling With State-Of-The-Art Technology

CHATSWORTH, CA – As with all ICON projects, the latest one is all about pushing the limits and challenging the status quo. When approaching a 1949 Mercury Coupe Derelict project, ICON co-founder/lead designer Jonathan Ward asked, “Why are all production EV vehicles devoid of heart and soul? Why is the aftermarket EV-conversion industry so slow to evolve and provide comprehensive systems and solutions? Why can’t you have the best of both worlds: the style and quality of a vintage vehicle with modern performance and functionality? We say you can have your cake and eat it too!”

As background, the purpose behind ICON’s Derelict line is to celebrate and preserve the original patina and exterior trim on the car. This 1949 Mercury Coupe was sourced from the original owners, and it has been in Southern California since new. ICON forensically disassembled the body, replaced all rubber, added insulation and sound-deadening products everywhere, then reassembled it in a manner that tried to make it look like nothing had been touched. A robust 4-wheel-independent chassis was developed with Art Morrison Enterprises alongside Brembo brakes.

The powertrain is all-modern and was a co-engineering exercise between ICON and Stealth EV. The dual electric motor, transmission-less design provides 470 lb-ft of freight-train torque and the equivalent of 400 horsepower, with no shifts all the way up to the Merc’s 120 MPH top speed. A full Tesla Performance 85kWh battery array is strategically fit throughout the vehicle for exceptional weight balance. It is capable of an estimated 150- to 200-mile range and has 1.5-hour full recharge capability. ICON positioned a CHAdeMO 125A fast-charger plug behind the tilting front license plate frame and also converted the original gas filler into a Tesla supercharger plug to expedite in-transit charging. A pioneering EV management system protects the batteries from overcharging and also provides thermal management and a host of capabilities and protections.

ICON had a bit of fun with the engine bay. Since the electric motors fit where the old transmission once resided, Jonathan Ward thought it would be fun to reference vintage V-8 speed equipment. The custom aluminum “engine” actually houses the battery controllers and a few of the Tesla modules – designed in a traditional V-8 array with a polished and media-blasted finish for a decidedly vintage aesthetic. Then ICON had custom cloth-braided sheathing made for the wires under the hood, referencing the original wiring loom.

In the interior, ICON wanted to keep the materials vintage-appropriate and light. Fabric from Knoll Textiles and hides from Moore & Giles and Relicate Leather realized the exact design that Jonathan Ward envisioned. Power windows operate via the original analog window cranks; tapping twice on the driver’s side drops or raises all windows at once. While all gauges are modern digital Andromeda, the design strongly references the original analog units, down to the typeface and background. Other significantly redesigned elements include in-dash A/C vents (not to mention electric A/C), and all custom switches and bezels are inspired by the originals but support modern components and functions.

To ICON, the smallest details are never superfluous. The 1949 Mercury EV Derelict was commissioned by a longtime client, who gave ICON the go-ahead to push the boundaries of design and engineering. The result is what makes an ICON Derelict a piece of rolling sculpture. SEMA 2018 attendees can see the ICON 1949 Mercury EV Derelict in the Optima Battery booth #20323.

When VW use the ID brand for its EVs, Mercedes-Benz use EQ, Audi use e-Tron, why Ford cant use Mercury for its electric vehicles? The advantage is that the Mercury EVs can be sold at Ford and Lincoln dealers...
