The Mondeo is getting an MCE with upgraded drivetrains. We still have a few more years to go before that lifecycle is complete. Ford can certainly start culling some models after that point. However Ford's headwinds are getting stronger across the board from trade to Brexit, they may have to move more aggressively on cost cutting so sudden and dramatic decisions are still possible. I would like to see Ford spin off its EU operation and perhaps align with VW. Ford of EU has long struggled to remain profitable, that goal may be impossible now. Now that NA is largely divorced from Ford EU products, not to mention the only remaining EU products are unprofitable, I could definitely see that operation changing significantly.

They had a chance to bring the 5-door Mondeo to the US before Buick brought the Regal Sportback. What's annoying me about their new plan is, there are sportbacks/liftbacks, Gran Coupes and Gran Tourismos available that meet several needs in one shape. Ford needs to stop being bipolar.

BLACK or WHITE.
SUV or SEDAN.

Mix and Match= Make Profit.

I expected the same flexibility GM has right now from Ford.

They had a chance to bring the 5-door Mondeo to the US before Buick brought the Regal Sportback. What's annoying me about their new plan is, there are sportbacks/liftbacks, Gran Coupes and Gran Tourismos available that meet several needs in one shape. Ford needs to stop being bipolar.

I expected the same flexibility GM has right now from Ford.
How many more sales is Ford going to get from a Fusion Hatchback that looks like a slightly "off" humpback Fusion with a rear windshield wiper? How many Buick Sportbacks do they sell? And now that GM sold that business, who is going to keep making the next version for Buick? I can't think of a more pointless comparison tbh.

Ford has denied a recent report talking about cutting up to 24.000 jobs in Europe and axing models like the Mondeo.

The said report comes from The Sunday Times and is based on estimations from Morgan Stanley analysts. According to the analysis, Ford would have to cut 12 percent of its 202,000 workers, mainly from its European operations as part of a major revamp.

Ford is indeed planning a restructure of its operations in Europe, where it lost $73 million between April and June. The report went on saying that the company will axe the Mondeo, Galaxy and S-Max models, replacing them with more profitable crossovers.

Ford dismissed the report and issued a statement: “We currently have our strongest-ever vehicle range in Europe. While we regularly evaluate our future product plans based on customer preferences and trends, there are no changes at this time. Mondeo remains a core part of our product line-up in Europe. We have upgrades coming for Mondeo later this year, which will see new powertrains as well as exterior and interior updates as well as enhancements to the Mondeo Hybrid range.”

“The number of job losses quoted by a number of media is pure speculation and we would not comment on that. As we said in our second quarter earnings in July, our Europe business requires a major redesign to deliver our longer-term target of 6% EBIT margin.”

The carmaker also denied that it’s considering axing the Galaxy and S-Max MPV models. Ford is manufacturing the Mondeo and the two MPVs at its Valencia plant in Spain, alongside the Kuga and Connect models.

It's a little hard to see Mondeo, Galaxy and S-Max going before 2021 since Ford has such a limited selection of margin rich products in the EU. They need a richer mix of utilities before they start cutting away their top-end so I think they'll just EOL those products. I hope the EU is getting the new Explorer, Mach1, Bronco, and Maverick; that would probably be all they need to improve their margins and drop those other vehicles.

The Mach1 is sure for Europe consumption... not in large numbers, but sure will be available here. Many cities are banning ICE vehicles from the center or the entire city , so, Ford needs to offer something for that customers.

The Explorer is too large for Europe. It can sell in small numbers, but it is too big , much wider and taller than the S-Max or Galaxie. I doubt Ford will launch it here.

The Bronco? Bronco is a pure american product. A rugged SUV that may, or may not be succesfull in Europe. Ford can try to sell it here.
The Maverick (baby Bronco) is another affair. This vehicle is the perfect vehicle for Europe: small, SUV, with (I hope) that young and active image that can attract many customers. The size in the B-C segment , between the EcoSport and Kuga (Escape) is perfect to fill the niche the C-Max will leave empty, soon.


Ford needs , urgently, something to put at the top of their European line. Something to replace the Galaxie/S-Max and, maybe, the Mondeo. Ford NorthAmerica currently has nothing in production or project that can fill this gap. The Edge is very small (and expensive), the Explorer very large. I think Ford of Europe needs to plan a crossover based on the next Mondeo. Is this already on track? I read something here at FIN that a vehicle like that is on track, and can be the replacement for the american Fusion, too.

The Edge IS a crossover based on the Mondeo....

But yes I see your point. I wonder if the 7-passenger model would help there?

Edge being offered with one engine, a diesel in two hp 180 or 210 appears to be a buzz kill.

Now with the updates for its brothers Mondeo,S-Max & Galaxy they have taken away the 2.0 EcoBoost, so the only gas engine offered now is the 1.5 EcoBoost with 165hp. But a kitchen full of diesels are offered instead which IMO is strange with so many moving away from diesel purchases.

And still the 2.0l 180 something hps on the Hybrid variant.

There is a new Mondeo and a companion Crossover in development, I'm already forgetting the date on that but I believe it's 2023. I'm not sure if the Mondeo project will survive since I've seen many projects fall victim to the rapid changes in the market. But the fact that Ford could still be working on a sedan is fascinating.

If the EU buys Ranger and Wrangler, they will buy Bronco too. I bet it would be a hit there.

As for Explorer, not too big at all, Land Rovers, Mercedes, Volvos, and Teslas are bigger! NG Explorer is way too good to leave at home, it would be a huge loss to Ford EU not to have it, it is by far their most advanced flagship product by miles. It won't sell in the huge numbers like the US, or be offered as cheaply, but it's a massive money earner.

Why isn't anyone asking the Question "why can't ford make money on cars when the competition can"

When CUVs become commoditized, over-produced, and Low margin like cars of today hat will ford do?

It seems like the Chicken tax is the only thing Ford has going for it nowadays.

Ford is just painting a picture of doom and gloom with its car profits to push the farce and accelerate their push marketing program for their high riders. At least that is the only thing I can think why a "car" company announces such a insane idea that they are quitting the car market. And it is working as I can see by the high riders club posters on the North American forums all excited about these tall box vehicles and the constant degrading of anyone who prefers a low center of gravity car.

Same crap they Ford are spewing about their Europe operations being in such trouble using BREXIT as its excuse which is a problem, but its a problem for all business's doing business with the UK. Is Ford the only one that cannot deal with or just another angle to use to stir the pot.

Ford brags that their Europe division is selling over 70% high trim vehicles and its high rider sales are smoking hot, but but but the operation is in BIG trouble and BIG changes and reductions are going to happen.

It all stinks of a big bowl of BS. But very happy for all the stock holders who think this is all going to be a gold mine idea, and the high rider club who seem happiest when all the neighbors have the same high riding machines in their driveways. Cookie cutter mentality at its best.

that is really the mystery and that is the right question. I don't know why they can't make money on cars when the everybody else does? If killing cars is such a good idea, why only Ford is doing it? Does Ford s*cks so much at "making" cars? :toetap:

For Five Hundred�s front-seat passengers, the distance between the H-point and the vehicle floor is up to four inches higher than in other midsize sedans. The distance is even greater for second-row passengers. And overall legroom is best in class for both front and rear occupants.

Sure-Footed All-Wheel Drive
The all-new Ford Five Hundred is available with all-wheel drive inspired from a proven Volvo system. This application uses an electronically controlled, electro-hydraulic Haldex limited-slip coupling positioned just ahead of the rear differential to transfer torque to the rear wheels as needed whenever front wheels begin to slip.

For Customers Who Carry People and Cargo
Five Hundred is about 3 inches longer than a Taurus but roughly a foot shorter than the Crown Victoria. Despite its size, Five Hundred�s efficient packaging provides exceptional rear-seat knee room and more trunk space than any sedan on the market.

Safer by Design
Acknowledged safety leader Volvo made a key contribution to the technology packed into the new Five Hundred. To begin with, the Volvo-inspired platform is engineered to offer class-leading stiffness with relatively soft crush zones designed into impact areas. When equipped with Ford�s Safety Canopy� and side air bags, Five Hundred is expected to earn top crash test ratings.

In frontal impacts, energy is absorbed by the frame rails, where an innovative bumper plate design � submitted for patent protection by Ford in North America � is employed. Excess energy is transferred around the passenger compartment into a high-strength safety cage. A patent-pending new design tailors the steering column�s collapse to the driver�s size and safety-belt use for optimum protection.

Five Hundred debuted when Chrysler 300 did. We know which one was a hit and which flopped. The Ford dealer gave me a 2007 Five Hundred loaner when repairing my 2004 Crown Victoria. I found the car less refined than the 2005 Focus I rented on a trip to South Florida. The current Explorer is the only hit Ford got from D3. The Five Hundred does seem to be a reliable car because I still see quite a few around in good condition.

One of the worst new vehicles I have ever driven was a Mercuy Montego loaner with the 3.0L V6. It felt like I was driving a glass fish tank with the power and refinement of an 80's Escort, just an awful piece of design and engineering on every level.

From a UK prospective the Explorer and the new 2020 model will not be too large(wide) for Europe. We have many many Range Rovers here which are 3 inches wider than the Explorer so no issues here. I lived in Massachusetts for a few years and most roads are no bigger or smaller than UK or mainland European roads. I have a Bullitt Mustang on order and a currently drive an edge sport and in many publications they alway state how big they are which is crap.
Over here we need a Explorer size suv because not all of us want to pay stupid/rip off prices for LR/RR product.

I owned a 2012 Explorer when I lived in Venezuela, now I lived in Spain. The Explorer is too big for the European standards. Certainly, some SUVs here are as big as the Explorer , like the Land Rover Range Rover, the VW Touareg, The Porsche Cayenne, but those cars are sold in small quantities. The roads, in general, are not the problem. The problems come when you want to park a car as big as the Explorer. The last reason to consider the Explorer is not for Europe is the price of the combustible here in Europe.

Ford can sell this car here, but in small numbers. And that is not what Ford needs here.
