New BMW X4 is Your $45k Compact Alternative to the X6
MARCH 05, 2014
Carscoops

Who would have thought a couple decades ago that BMW would try to conquer every segment possible…even those that don't exist yet, but here we are, and the Bavarians are opening the gates to another niche, that of the more stylish, premium compact SUVs with coupe-like rooflines or in their own words, "Sport Activity Coupe", with the X4.

It’s the smaller-sized sibling to the X6 and the final production version of last April's X4 Concept. You could also say that it’s a glorified and more expensive X3 with sharper exterior looks (and compromised cabin space due to the lower roof design), as it uses the same platform, engines and even interior.

Speaking of the X4's insides and besides the dashboard that is practically identical to the X3, BMW says the driver and front passenger sit 20mm lower than in the X3, while they've also sculpted the rear side seats to make the fifth person as uncomfortable as possible.

Not too sure about this whole concept. It seems to be an oversized for it's sedan segment, fuel inefficient, undersized for an SUV in it's segment......thingie. :yikes:

And based on sales of the X6, not too many other people like the concept either. So with the X4 it seems that BMW is trying to see if making it smaller will increase sales. In the US BMW was only able to move 5500 units of the X6 for 2013.

Proving that its knack for creating niche vehicles is still running strong, BMW has officially unveiled the production version of the 2015 X4 which brings X6 styling cues in a smaller package that will cater to buyers looking for an alternative to the more utilitarian looking X3 crossover...
