Ford's Mystery Mini Is Version of Overseas Mazda Verisa: Spy Report

At first, with our expert insiders refusing to ID this vehicle spotted near the company’s HQ in Dearborn, Mich., we figured it for a future mini from Ford. And we had some advice for the Ford folks: Tighten up those body fits before you head into production, or this one won’t even make its mark in the rental car market.

But now we’ve got a fix on the mystery mini: It’s a cobbled version of the Mazda Verisa—a model sold overseas, not in the U.S. It is tiny at only 150 in. long, with a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that should deliver fuel economy numbers in the high 30-mpg range.

So what’s it doing at Ford’s engineering center? We figure that Ford is looking at this vehicle as a model for its smallest sedan of the future,

Ford just needs a small car here ASAP. Listening to the news this morning and people were saying that gas will be going up 6%, and I though thats just great for Ford and GM right now. Do you know when the release dat would be, like late 2007? Sometime in 2008?

well Ford does have a successful small car that is to have 30/40mpg (which of course it precisely in the meat of the b-segment).. the Focus.

this will be revealed ass a concept at NAIAS 08, and go on sale either in the fall 08 or in the first half of 09.

new Focus is probably going to be shown at NAIAS 09 and production will begin early 2011.

:-mad-: :frown:
my old refain - Don't show show 'em unless they're coming out before that autoshow re-occurs - ie less than 12 months to intro.

Couldn't they do partial mock-ups, models/maquettes, sketches and have a ArtGallery of TheFuture? Having a full-size "tease" is just counter-productive.
The competition's industrial espionage will have found out most secrets anyway, BUT the consumers will just get their hopes up prematurely.
