...yawn. You know how many times my ICE car left outside has frozen shut in the cold? All the **** time. ****, I've had the lock freeze and lock me out on multiple occasions, and it barely touches the single digits here maybe a couple times a winter. That's why god invented garages.
Also with the latest over the air Tesla update, to deal with that particualar issue, owners have the option to have their car preheat so the windows, doors, door handles are thawed out when they want to drive the car during an extreme freezing winter event. While at the same time, no matter how cold it is, with an Ev, there is no issue of 'cranking' the car, since the cold does not impact the ability to just 'start'. Noted by people all over the coldest parts of the world, and EV is their best option in extreme temperatures. Plugged in or not the owner can decide if the car warms itself from the grid or not.

Very few ICE cars will struggle to start in sub zero temps, assuming the battery is not old, and not a single one of them will see anything close to the ~50% range reduction that EVERY EV suffers.

Like many, when it's cold outside my heater is kicking in hard the entire time I am driving, and I have front and rear seat warmers going, because I can.....with maybe a 2% hit on FE and subsequent range. Try that with any EV, in addition to the many other compromises you pay oh so much for.

And bloggin, no thoughts about the sales issues Tesla is having huh.

The charge rate of a smaller generator is hardly ideal, and produces a ton of emissions and noise. The power generated by a much larger Diesel generator might help, but is far more nasty and loud. Imagine all these Tesla owners running these units for hours on end, which of course defeats the purpose of BEV over a PZEV ICE. Which is the whole point of this article.

I own one. A standard 120v will get you 5 mph. That’s how I charge mine every day...because .01% of the population drives 200mi a day.

Christ; be serious. This is a rare freaking event. How many people are hanging out at their house with no HVAC, refrigerators, cooking implements, or lights for days? Stop being obtuse.

But what happens for example in a failed "Greein Plan" society that would one day ban far more reliable fossil fuel power generation systems for flaky renewable ones, and they do it far too soon to make a political point. Hardly unrealistic, and very possible if not probable, depending on who is in office. The potential disruption from politcial winds, is frightening.

Point here, there is no utopia. False alarmist promises from the 70's about running out of gasoline soon, were just more BS, just like recent alarmist theories. What we now know is that there is vast amounts of petroleum discovered and far more undiscovered, and thus no need to force change on our lifestyles with unsustainable urgency. Let people decide. Free market capitalism is the answer. The only answer.

...though I agree with you about the vast majority of that, EVs are still better vehicles....in capital investment, in resources, in labor, in longevity, and most importantly in energy efficiency. We have an ever growing planet and efficiency is becoming very important if we are to lift everyone to first world standards. A world full of EVs is doable. A world of petroleum cars is not. I think the Bollinger is a great example of a potential future. There are places where EV could essentially be a multi purpose survival tool. Solar panels + an EV is essentially an energy plant, transport, communications link, farm tractor, emergency shelter, etc. Better than any draft horse could ever be.

Think big. Think problems solvable. EVs are part of that solution.

Of course EV's are part of the solution. I just don't want an invasive government forcing automakers, and thus me, to change. Build a better product that does not cost more and limit consumers, and they will vote with their money - not mandates.
...no one is forcing you to change. Tesla is still selling a great number of vehicles in the US, even with the measly $1875 tax credit...which ends in 2.5 months...because it makes a better product. Ford is selling $60k Explorers & Corsairs. A $50k Model Y is hardly too expensive nowadays.

Issue is still range/affordability/size class. The interior of the Taycan is Model 3 sized, not Model S. The performance of the base 4S is Model 3 Performance level. The range of the base 4S is probably 25% less. The cost of a Taycan over a M3P is about 100% more.

Now, few, if anyone, are cross shopping a Taycan and an M3P. If you want a Porsche, you want a Porsche. But the same goes for Tesla. If you want a Tesla, you want a Tesla, and based on social media shares, Tesla Model S led the country as the “dream car” pick. Given how many people want Teslas, I sincerely doubt anyone is going to abandon Tesla for something that costs so much more.

Anecdotally, I know 2 guys in other forums who own Model S who put deposits on Taycans; both canceled when Porsche announced pricing. Makes you wonder if that is why Porsche released the lower priced models so soon after.

Have not driven a 3 yet, but I seriously doubt performance to be on par with a Porsche. Acceleration is not the only metric that matters.
...well, you should drive one first. It handles marvelously. Expect a Track Pack soon that will increase magazine/marketing numbers. The only shortfall of the current 3 is tires and brake pads, both of which are getting a packaged upgrade...though it already was faster around most tracks than a BMW M3, which isn’t exactly a low bar.
