IIHS Confirms: Ford F150 is the Safest Full Size Pickup

The Ford F150 reinforces the fact that it's the best full size pickup in the American market. It did so by beating all other contenders in the IIHS crash test for both larger model types, the crew cab and the extended cab versions. The Overhyped Dodge Ram fared the worst and needed a special mention.

Only three out of seven full-size pickup trucks crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway earned an acceptable rate or higher when it comes to the toughest safety test.
And only one, the Ford F-150, received the highest rating of "good" and was named a Top Safety Pick.
“Ford is leading the way among large pickup manufacturers when it comes to protecting people in a range of crashes and offering technology to warn drivers of imminent frontal crashes,” says Raul Arbelaez, vice president of the Institute’s Vehicle Research Center.
The institute, the safety arm of the insurance industry, says it tested two different configurations for each pickup, the crew cab and extended cab.
The toughest test by IIHS, the one that has tripped makers of cars and trucks alike, is what is called the small overlap crash test. In it, a vehicle is crashed in a way that simulates hitting a pole or other narrow object on one side of the front or the other.
The pickups that fared poorest in that crucial test were the Ram 1500 Crew Cab and the Ram 1500 Quad Cab. Both were handed a marginal rating overall, IIHS says.

The toughest test by IIHS, the one that has tripped makers of cars and trucks alike, is what is called the small overlap crash test. In it, a vehicle is crashed in a way that simulates hitting a pole or other narrow object on one side of the front or the other.
Because of their weight, trucks have a huge disadvantage in this test. In reality, they should use a standard pole, which would likely be snapped off when a heavier vehicle strikes it, reducing the deceleration rate of force, and the damage to the vehicle/occupants.

Does the Chevy shake manifest itself on the new trucks also, or limited to the previous ones only. Apparently some Ram trucks also seem to have this problem...

Someone at Ford marketing must make use of this... A clear home run... Especially rub it in to the Ram faithful....

Something like, yeah this truck is aluminum, and this one is steel, but after seeing the IIHS video, which one do you want to put your wife and children into!?

Screw the truck vs a Spark. These are real-life pictures taken by me. 2000 Dodge Neon vs Freightliner Columbia. My daughter was in the passenger seat of the Freightliner. All 4 in the Neon died. It ran a stop sign and hit the Freightliner perpendicular in the passenger steer tire. The truck was going 30mph, the Neon and estimated 60mph.

edit: btw you can see the Neon's driver door sticking out between the fuel tank and the passenger door of the Freightliner
